Plenary: Anambra Law Revision Bill’ Pass Second Reading

A Bill for a Law to provide for the revision, printing and publication of the Revised Laws of Anambra State and for connected purposes, has scaled through second reading.

After the first reading at plenary on Tuesday, Anambra Assembly Majority Leader, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme through ‘Order 74’ of the House, moved for the second reading and was seconded
Hon. Anayo Okpalaeke (Aguata one constituency).

Leading the debate, Hon. Ofodeme, the lawmaker representing Ekwusigo Constituency emphasized on the need for the law to be revised.

Speaking in support of the bill, Bar. Jude Umennajiego representing Onitsha South two, Deputy Chief Whip. Bar. Obi Nweke (Anambra East), Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Nobel Igwe (Ogbaru one), Chief Whip Bar. Jude Ngobili (Ihiala two), Deputy Majority Leader, Dr. Jude Akpua (Njikoka two), Hon. Kingsley Udemezue (Idemili North), Hon. Anayo Okpalaeke (Aguata one), Hon. Chidi Ibemeka (Njikoka One) and Hon. Mimiy Ikpeazu Azikiwe (Onitsha North One) in their separate submissions, outline the importance for the revision, printing and publication of the Revised Laws

“This move will bring the law of the state upto date and bring sanity into Anambra laws and judicial system.

‘The review of the law is apt because the society keeps revolving. Anambra state law was last reviewed in 1990 and it is important that the 8th Anambra is revising it, 35 years after.

“Ndi Anambra needs to know the laws existing and those to be updated in the state so they could comply.

“Most of the laws in Anambra state are obsolete and need to be replaced with current laws that would bring sanity to the legal system.

“Law revision is part of democracy and it
will make research and reference easy.
All modification, expectation and adaptation should be put into consideration because It will put everyone on the same page.

“Ignorance of the law is not an excuse and by documenting this laws, ndi Anambra will be well informed” the lawmakers said.

The Speaker of the 8th Anambra Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze
who presided plenary, constituted an adhoc ‘Law Review Committee’ to be headed by Hon. Mimiy Ikpeazu Azikiwe.

Rt. Hon. Udeze referred the bill the adhoc committed urging them to do a detailed job work on the 221 bills of Anambra State and report back within four weeks.
