Plenary: Anambra State Market Safty Bill Passed Into Law

A bill for a law to ensure the safety and protection of markets in Anambra state has been passed into law by the Anambra State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
after consideration and amendment of the report from a joint committee on Trade, Commerce and Industry, and committee on Environment, the Majority Leader Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme moved a motion for the third reading and was seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Nobel Igwe.

Hon. Ofodeme the member representing Ekwusigo constituency before moving a motion for adjustment, stating that the law will sanitize the activities of markets in Anambra state.

The Majority Leader commended members of the 8th assembly for their dedication, creativity and commitment in supporting the executive

Anambra Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze appreciated the lawmakers in making sure that the law was passed.

The Speaker said the law will come into force from the 27th of June 2024.

ANN gathered that the purpose of the law is to ensure the safety of people and property. Ensure quick response and protection in case of an inferno. Ensure security footage in case of any breaches and also re-position Anambra markets to be technologically driven.

” Any market that fails to adhear to the law within four months of its its enactment shall be issued a notice of closure and that the marked leaders at the point of disobidence shall be replaced and a fine be meted to the market.

“Every market shall establish a stand-by water supply outlet to fight fire outbreak.

The house adjurned and to reconvene on Wednesday 29th May.
