Prince Eniola Oyesosin, son of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo in Osun State, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin, is in police custody following the death of a U.S.-based Nigerian professor and politician, Richard Adeoriokin, on Saturday evening.

As reported by THE WHISTLER, Professor Adeoriokin was fatally shot by a local security guard acting on Prince Oyesosin’s instructions.

The prince allegedly requested the guard to fire celebratory shots into the air in honour of the deceased, who had paid him a courtesy visit.

Unfortunately, Adeoriokin was hit on the leg by a bullet from the security Guard’s gun, resulting in his death.

The incident had sparked outrage from angry members of the community who mobbed and killed the guard.

The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) expressed its condolences and designated the incident as unfortunate, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demanded a thorough investigation.

Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, issued a statement clarifying the events: “The incident occurred on 27/1/2024 at about 9:48 pm after the 50th Coronation Anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin where one Prince Eniola Oyeyode ‘m’ of Ejigbo Instructed one of his civilian guards named Hammed Abdul Jelili ‘m’ of Ejigbo to fire his double barrel gun into the air to confirm if the gun is in good condition or not, but instead shot directly at the victim and he was rushed to a hospital but confirmed dead by the Doctor.”

The police spokesperson noted that, “the prince Eniola Oyeyode who gave the order to his civilian guard to fire the gun has been arrested and detained. The Commissioner of Police, CP Bzigu Kwazhi, therefore appeals to members of the public, especially the residents of Ejigbo to remain calm as discreet investigation has commenced immediately.”
