Prioritise safety in sharing relief materials, Soludo tells philanthropists

…as Police confirms 22 deaths in Okija stampede

Governor Charles Chukwuma Ojukwu has urged all well-meaning individuals and organisations engaged in charitable activities to prioritise the safety and well-being of beneficiaries.

The Governor stated this while mourning the death of 22 persons that died in a stampede during a rice-sharing event in Okija town in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

In a statement released by his Press Secretary, Chris Aburime, Governor Soludo extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, especially the women, the elderly, pregnant, nursing mothers and children who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident.

While appreciating Obi Jackson Foundation for such noble intention of sharing relief materials with less privileged members of the community during this festive season, the Governor however regretted that the resulting tragedy underscored the urgent need for a more structured and safer approach to distributing such assistance.

“It is strongly advised that future distributions of relief materials be conducted in a more organised and decentralised manner, with adequate crowd control measures in place.

“This may include establishing multiple distribution points within the community to reduce overcrowding at a single location; implementing a system to prioritise vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children and people with disabilities; employing trained personnel to manage crowds, ensure orderly queues, and provide assistance to those in need; and conducting public awareness campaigns to educate the public on safety protocols during such events.

“The Anambra State Government in a prompt action on the incident has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede.”

Governor Soludo promised to work closely with relevant agencies to determine the root causes of this unfortunate event and ensure that any negligence or lapses in safety protocols are duly addressed.

In the meantime, Anambra State Police command has confirmed that 22 persons have died in the tragic stampede that happened in Okija, Anambra State on Saturday, during an event to distribute rice to indigent people.

Police Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam visited the victims in the hospital and condoled with the families and friends of those who lost their lives.

He said the commissioner commisserated with family and friends of the deceased, while wishing those who sustained injury a quick recovery.

He said investigation into the unfortunate incident is still ongoing, and that police remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of Ndi Anambra on crime prevention, responding promptly and effectively to emergencies, protecting vulnerable populations and fostering a sense of security and community.###
