Real Madrid issued a scathing statement against LaLiga president Javier Tebas on Monday, accusing him of repeatedly attacking the club and calling for new leadership at the head of Spanish football’s top division.

The Spanish giants said Tebas had crossed a line by publicly criticising the club’s handling of its media strategy, describing his conduct as unbecoming of someone in his position.
“Our club considers it intolerable for the LaLiga President to use his institutional position to repeatedly disparage and attack Real Madrid in the manner he does in every one of his public statements,” the club said.
Madrid said Tebas’s latest comments, which touched on an article by an independent journalist, were “particularly serious and incomprehensible.”
“He reacts against our club by taking the liberty of critiquing our sporting strategy—an utterly absurd and irresponsible move,” the statement read.
Club calls for change at the top of LaLiga
Real Madrid went further, suggesting Tebas had forgotten the nature of his role and calling on clubs to seek new leadership for the league.
“The LaLiga President is not the owner of the competition, but an administrator serving the clubs that comprise it and have entrusted him with its leadership,” the club said, adding that Spanish football “urgently needs a leader capable of managing the competition… while upholding the fundamental duty of neutrality.”
Tebas hits back: conspiracy talk is an “excuse”
Tebas, for his part, dismissed Madrid’s grievances as a pattern of deflection, pointing to the club’s past complaints over refereeing and the Negreira case, a long-running scandal involving payments from Barcelona to a former refereeing official.
“Real Madrid’s usual conspiracy narrative has already started. When it’s not the Negreira case, it’s the referee; and when it’s not the referee, they say he isn’t an experienced referee,” Tebas said.
He rejected suggestions that officiating has been biased against the club this season.
“Saying that referees are targeting Real Madrid is living in another galaxy. It’s simply an excuse to cover up other shortcomings that are visible in these opening games of the season,” Tebas said, adding: “It’s September, and they’re already claiming that the league has been rigged. This repeated excuse is no longer convincing to anyone with a bit of common sense.”
