Real Madrid stage late comeback to beat Roma 4-3 in Champions League thriller

Real Madrid produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Roma 4-3 in a high-scoring UEFA Champions League league-stage match at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

Roma took the lead in the 20th minute through Marten de Roon and restored their advantage after Kylian Mbappé had equalised for the visitors. Donyell Malen then scored twice early in the second half to put the Italian side 3-1 ahead.

Real Madrid, managed by Jose Mourinho against one of his former clubs, responded with three goals in the final eight minutes. Carlos Espí reduced the deficit in the 83rd minute, Endrick levelled in the 85th, and defender Antonio Rüdiger headed the winner in the 90th minute.

The result gave Real Madrid their second win of the league phase, taking them to six points, while Roma remain on one point after two matches.

Roma had started brightly and capitalised on set-pieces and counter-attacks, but Real Madrid’s late surge underlined their reputation for dramatic recoveries in European competition.
