Romero Completes Atletico Madrid Move From Tottenham

Argentina defender Cristian Romero has signed a contract with Atletico Madrid until 2031 after completing his medical and formalities.

Tottenham Hotspur will receive a €40 million package that includes a 15 percent sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Romero, who spent five seasons at the north London club, posted a farewell message to supporters.

“I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club. It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives,” he wrote.

“I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together over these years.”

He recalled arriving with the ambition of making his mark and helping the club end a long trophy drought.

“When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history. So I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice to achieve something that had seemed very difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. Together, we did it.”

Romero said he preferred to focus on the positive memories rather than imperfections in the journey.

“The journey wasn’t perfect, but I don’t want that to define my goodbye. I choose to remember happy moments, the lessons, the people who stood by me… and the love I received during these five years. Thank you, everyone. Love Spurs forever.”

The centre-back is now set to link up with manager Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano.
