Ronaldo Denied as DR Congo Hold Portugal in World Cup Opener

Portugal were frustrated in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a hugely impressive DR Congo.

Portugal, one of the pre-tournament favourites, raced into an early lead when Joao Neves headed home inside six minutes and looked to be on course for a comfortable win.

But DR Congo fought their way back into the game and levelled seconds before half-time, when Yoane Wissa rose highest at a corner to score his nation’s first World Cup goal.

The African side, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, showed resilience throughout the contest and nearly completed a remarkable comeback after the break. Cedric Bakambu struck the post as Portugal struggled to regain control of the match.

Much of the spotlight was on veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who was making a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance. The 41-year-old had opportunities to secure all three points but failed to convert two close-range chances in the second half.

DR Congo’s goal was particularly significant, marking the nation’s first World Cup goal since the 1974 tournament and rewarding an energetic performance against one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Portugal dominated possession but struggled to create clear opportunities after their early breakthrough. The Congolese defence remained organised and disciplined, frustrating a Portuguese attack led by Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva.

The result leaves Group K finely balanced, with Portugal set to face Uzbekistan in their next fixture while DR Congo take confidence into their meeting with Colombia.

Cristiano Ronaldo cut a peripheral figure throughout as he featured at his sixth World Cup.

Portugal are 90 minutes into another major tournament and once again the questions are starting around whether Cristiano Ronaldo should start their second match.

He did absolutely nothing today which, while not entirely his fault, does not bode well for the remainder of this World Cup.

Problems for Roberto Martinez to solve ahead of their next game.
