Sanae Takaichi Elected Japan’s First Female Prime Minister

Sanae Takaichi was elected Japan’s first female prime minister by parliament on Tuesday, a milestone in the nation’s political history.

Takaichi, 64, takes office as Japan faces economic challenges and political divisions, and days before a scheduled visit by US President Donald Trump.

A native of Nara near Osaka, Takaichi began her career as a television presenter before entering politics. Known for her conservative views, she was a close ally of late former prime minister Shinzo Abe and has pledged to continue many of his policies, including efforts to revise Japan’s pacifist constitution.

She has also visited the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors Japan’s war dead, including those convicted of war crimes during World War II — a move that has drawn criticism from China and South Korea, key regional partners.

Takaichi opposes same-sex marriage and proposals to allow married couples to use separate surnames.

Analysts say her stance on security issues, particularly regarding China, could influence Japan’s foreign relations. Domestically, her plans to increase government spending and cut taxes will face scrutiny as the country grapples with rising inflation and living costs
