Sen. Natasha Akpoti Trial in Cybercrime Case Adjourned to Oct. 20

The cybercrime trial of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been adjourned to October 20, following objections raised by her legal team in the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Akpoti-Uduaghan faces six counts under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024, for allegedly transmitting false and injurious information via electronic means. The charges relate to her statements in April 2025, during a public rally in Ihima, Kogi State and in a later television interview, where she claimed that Senate President Godswill Akpabio instructed former Governor Yahaya Bello to assassinate her.

Her counsel, Ehiogie West-Idahosa, SAN, filed a preliminary objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction over the case and lifted concerns about not being served with copies of prosecution witness statements. Prosecutors argued that the case was ready to proceed and that witnesses were present in court.

Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that the preliminary objection must be heard before the prosecution can begin presenting its case.
