Senator Uche Ekwunife Appointed DG South-East Governors Forum

Two months after she vacated her seat as Senator representing Anambra Central, Uche Ekwunife (Iyom) has been appointed the Director-General of the South-East Governors Forum (SEGOF).
The Forum is the umbrella body of governors of the five states in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone, comprising Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo and Abia States.

The appointment was conveyed to her in a letter dated 31 July 2023, by the new Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma.
As Director-General of the Forum, Senator Ekwunife will head the Secretariat in Enugu and liaise with the five governors in pursuit of the Forum’s common objectives.

She brings into her new job several years of experience as a technocrat and politician. A former top bank executive, she has twice represented the Njikoka/Dunukofia/Anaocha Federal constituency in the House of Representatives.
She later switched to the Red Chamber of the National Assembly where she served on two occasions as the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District.

Governor Uzodinma took over the chairmanship of the South East Governors Forum from Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, last June. He promises to reunite the Governors, infuse a new life into the body and reposition it as a veritable platform to impact the region’s social, political and economic affairs.

Expectations are high that the Forum is poised to bring the much-needed unity, so that the region can rise from the present inertia to become once again, a strong voice in regional and national affairs.
With Ekwunife as head, the Forum’s Secretariat will serve as the resource hub which will offer the governors of the South-East region the opportunity to pool ideas and resources together to confront common socio-economic challenges and undertake projects that will uplift the wellbeing of the people of the region.
