Senegal Coach Urges Fans to Halt Fundraisers After CAF Sanctions

Senegal’s triumphant Africa Cup of Nations coach Pape Bouna Thiaw appealed to supporters Thursday to cease crowdfunding efforts on his behalf following hefty penalties from African football authorities, redirecting their goodwill toward pressing societal needs instead.

Thiaw, who guided the Teranga Lions to glory in the 2025 AFCON final against hosts Morocco, faced a five-match ban and a $100,000 fine from the Confederation of African Football for what it termed “unsporting conduct” during the match’s chaotic climax.

The turmoil erupted when Thiaw instructed his squad to leave the field in objection to a refereeing call late in the game, only for play to restart and Senegal to clinch victory in extra time.

In an Instagram message, Thiaw expressed appreciation for the outpouring of backing but urged a pivot in priorities.

“People of Senegal, my family. Your solidarity since the announcement of the sanctions goes straight to my heart. Thank you for the love you show me every day,” he wrote.

“I humbly ask you not to organise fundraisers in my name. While I understand and appreciate this outpouring of generosity, I invite you to redirect these funds to more urgent causes, for the benefit of those who truly need them,” Thiaw added.

CAF’s rulings extended beyond the coach, imposing suspensions and fines on players from both teams, alongside a $615,000 penalty on Senegal’s federation for misconduct by fans, athletes, and officials, with Morocco’s counterparts also sanctioned in the aftermath of the heated encounter.
