The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria has called on authorities to review the continued detention of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, warning that any perceived arbitrary or politically motivated actions risk undermining public trust in democratic institutions.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its Secretary-General, Nafi’u Baba-Ahmad, the council urged that due process be strictly observed in the handling of El-Rufai’s case.
“The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) firmly believes that strict adherence to the rule of law is sacrosanct and must apply equally to all citizens, irrespective of status, political affiliation, or personal disposition,” the statement said.
The council stressed that it does not support or condone criminality in any form, but insisted that the pursuit of justice itself must remain just and consistent with established legal procedures and constitutional safeguards.
It expressed particular concern over the circumstances of El-Rufai’s continued detention and what it described as apparent difficulties in meeting his bail conditions.
“Like every Nigerian, Malam Nasir El-Rufai is entitled to his fundamental rights and is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction,” the council added.
The SCSN called on relevant authorities to operate strictly within the confines of the Constitution and existing laws, ensuring due process at every stage. It also urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could be viewed as politically motivated persecution.
“Justice must not only be done but must be manifestly seen to be done,” the statement said, arguing that consistent and impartial application of the law remains essential for national cohesion and long-term stability.
The council reiterated its commitment to advocating justice, protecting citizens’ rights and promoting peaceful coexistence across the country.
