Solanke’s stoppage-time header rescues 10-man Tottenham at Old Trafford

Dominic Solanke headed a stoppage-time equaliser to earn 10-man Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Bryan Mbeumo had put United ahead in the 73rd minute, but Solanke levelled in the 90+2nd minute, climbing above Lisandro Martinez to meet Sandro Tonali’s cross and give Roberto De Zerbi’s side a valuable point.

Bentancur sent off

The game boiled over in the 78th minute when Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a straight red card for violent conduct. After a heavy challenge on United defender Luke Shaw, the Uruguayan responded to a shove with a headbutt, triggering a mass confrontation between players from both teams.

Mbeumo breaks the deadlock

United had been second best for long spells, but took the lead when Matheus Cunha cut the ball back from the left and Mbeumo turned and rolled a low shot past Antonin Kinsky into the bottom corner.

Tottenham refuse to fold

Despite being a man down, Tottenham kept pushing. With eight minutes of added time signalled, Tonali delivered a cross from the left edge of the box. Solanke won the physical duel with Martinez and flicked a header across goalkeeper Senne Lammens into the far corner.

Both sides had chances in a tense contest. Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie missed a clear opening in the second half, while United’s Bruno Fernandes and others were wasteful in front of goal.

A smattering of boos greeted the final whistle, though they were far quieter than those at half-time, when the score was still 0-0.

The draw leaves United mid-table, while Tottenham remain near the bottom of the standings after six matches.
