Writer Solomon Buchi has called for a boycott of South African singer Tyla’s planned performance in Nigeria, criticising her for remaining silent during xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
Buchi argued that the singer failed to speak out when Nigerians and other immigrants faced violence, yet is now seeking to perform for Nigerian audiences.
He urged Nigerians to treat the concert as a chance to protest against xenophobia rather than welcome her uncritically.
“Tyler must not have that show,” Buchi said, stressing that local artistes should instead receive support.
He suggested that fans of her music could travel to South Africa for her concerts, while those who attend the Nigerian show should stage peaceful protests.
“It’s not about Tyla. I have no beef with her, but it’s about coming together as a people and saying, no, we have a voice and that voice matters,” he added.
