Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has expressed shock over the sudden death of the Majority Leader, Anambra State House of Assembly and member representing Awka South One Constituency, Dr Nnamdi Okafor.
Dr Okafor reportedly slumped at Sandton City Johannesburg, South Africa where he was attending a statutory training session of members of Anambra State House of Assembly.
But in a statement released by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime and made available to Metro Times in Awka, Governor Soludo said Dr Nnamdi Okafor was an active participant at the 7th Assembly who devoted his time and energy to represent his constituency.
He conveyed his sympathy to those he left behind, including his family, Awka Constituency One and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Uche Okafor as well as other lawmakers.
Earlier, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Uche Okafor had notify the public of the death of one of her members and majority leader of the House, Hon. (Dr) Nnamdi G. Okafor who was representing Awka South One Constituency.
A statement released by his Chief Press Secretary Emma Madu, said the cause of his death is yet to be ascertained as the Houzs awaits the autopsy result.
Rt. Hon Okafor described the death of the Majority Leader of the House as a great loss to the Legislative Institution in the State, Awka Community and the State at large and noted that the deceased was a knowledgeable and active legislator whose contributions both in the legislature and in his constituency, distinguished him among his contemporaries.
The Speaker who spoke with uncontrollable tears, maintained that the State House of Assembly has lost a great, erudite and eloquent lawmaker in the person of Hon. Nnamdi Okafor and posited that the deceased lawmaker’s short but eventful life and times are worthy of emulation.
The city of Awka was thrown into mourning following this sad incident as many residents wondered why this energetic and young lawmaker could die so suddenly.
The two-time lawmaker had failed in his ambition to become the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance for Awka North & South Federal Constituency in next year’s general election.
However, it could be recalled that the Anambra State House of Assembly about two months ago buried the member representing Aguata 1 Constituency, Hon Okechukwu Okoye, who was killed by unknown gunmen.
The death of the Majority Leader brings to four the number of deaths recorded by the legislative arm between Aug 16, 2017 till date, following the earlier demise of Hon Francis Mmegbuanaeze and Hon Patrick Aniuno.
