In 2007, I had a near-death experience at the hands of daredevil armed carjackers in Abuja.
I was abducted somewhere in Wuse. Was forced at gun-point to sit at the back seat, sandwiched between two heavily armed robbers, at the back of my friend’s car which we were travelling in, and driven to a bush near the airport in Lugbe.
That night, I had on my Chelsea FC shirt. This unfortunately earned me extra beating and harassment. As we drove, the robber sitting in the passenger seat in the front cursed me out for supporting a ‘useless’ club. In anger, he lashed out and hit me with the butt of a gun which split open my skull. He boldly claimed he was an Arsenal supporter. As blood gushed out, the one sitting beside me on the right pushed me further away from him, so that I will not stain his clothes.
They drove right inside a bush part In Lugbe. When we got to a clearing, the one that claimed he was an Arsenal supporter ripped my Chelsea shirt, and made us lie down on our bellies.
I heard them discussing ‘wasting’ us and said my last prayers.
I was waiting for the sound of gunshots to start going off, when miraculously, I heard the engine of my friend’s car start, followed by that of the Volkswagen Golf car they were driving originally.
They drove off into the night leaving us on our own in no man’s land.
