A 200-level law student at Achievers University in Owo, Ondo State, has threatened to sue the institution for ₦500 million over an admission he claims was “fake”. (Vanguard)
In a petition submitted to the Vice-Chancellor’s office and signed by lawyer Abdulfatai Abdulsalam, the student, Akinlolu Richard Omisade, alleged that the university failed to forward his admission details to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). “Our client’s name was not found on the JAMB portal… implying that his details were never forwarded,” the lawyer stated.
Omisade said he received an admission letter dated August 16, 2024, but later discovered via the JAMB portal that his name was absent from the list of admitted students for his programme. He accused the school of issuing “unverifiable admission letters” that could exploit unsuspecting applicants.
When contacted, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Olaniyi Adekanye, said the institution is already engaging with the student’s parents: “The school chairman is in contact with the student’s parents to resolve the issue in his best interest, and discussions are ongoing.”
The situation underscores concerns over admission transparency in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and raises questions about regulatory oversight by academic and admissions bodies.
