A 35-year-old woman accused of firing at least ten rounds from an AR-15-style rifle at the Beverly Hills residence of singer Rihanna and rapper A$AP Rocky appeared in court on Tuesday and was formally charged with attempted murder.
Ivanna Ortiz was arraigned in a Los Angeles County courtroom for the March 8 attack, which occurred in broad daylight around 1:21 p.m. and struck the security gate, an Airstream trailer where the couple was present, the main house occupied by Rihanna’s mother, their three young children and staff, as well as a neighbouring property.
No one was injured.
Ortiz, wearing a blue county-issued jumpsuit with her blonde hair in two braids, did not enter a plea during the brief hearing.
She faces one count of attempted murder targeting Rihanna (born Robyn Fenty) and A$AP Rocky (born Rakim Mayers), nine counts of assault with a firearm, two counts of shooting into an inhabited dwelling and one count of shooting at a motor vehicle.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman told reporters after the hearing: “In light of her charges, she could face life behind bars.”
The judge reduced Ortiz’s bail from an initial $10.225 million to $1.8 million and issued a no-contact order with the victims. She remains in custody.
A full arraignment and plea hearing has been scheduled for March 26.
Ortiz was arrested two days after the shooting. Authorities have not disclosed a motive.
