Global pop star Taylor Swift has dismissed rumors that she was jealous of her best friend, fellow musician Selena Gomez, for getting married before her, clarifying that her speech at Gomez’s recent wedding was misrepresented.
Gomez married producer Benny Blanco late last month, with Swift in attendance. Rumors later circulated that Swift had joked during her speech about being “beaten to the altar,” sparking speculation of jealousy.
Addressing the rumors during an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Swift stressed that she “made a point to not mention anything about my engagement” during her toast.
Teasing Old Fashion
Instead of focusing on relationship milestones, Swift said her humor centered on their early years of friendship.
“I did do some light teasing about the way we dressed in 2008, the year we met. It was the year of deep, deep V-neck,” Swift explained. “It was the year of colorful skinny jeans.”
The “Cruel Summer” singer emphasized that the intent of her speech was to celebrate the couple and their bond.
“I talked about how happy I am for her and just how beautiful it’s been to get to be a part of her life, but I did not make it about me,” Swift explained, reaffirming her happiness for Gomez.
Swift is currently engaged to NFL star Travis Kelce. She also revealed during the interview that she had not told friend and fellow artist Ed Sheeran about her engagement because the English singer can only be reached through email or FaceTime, as he does not use a phone.
