Tension in Imo as suspected ESN attack leaves six people dead

At least six people were killed by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network in Imo State on Wednesday.

The attack took place in the early hours at Ama Hausa in Garki, Okigwe Local Government Area.

Residents reported continuous gunfire from midnight until about 9 am when Nigerian Army troops managed to repel the attackers.

A resident, who requested anonymity, described the terrifying ordeal: “We heard gunshots around midnight, and again about 9 am.

“Everyone was running for cover. The attackers set the Ama Hausa area ablaze and shot at people, killing about seven.”

The state Police Command Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow for the loss of lives. “It’s a very unfortunate incident, and we are doing everything possible to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.”

Okoye extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged residents to provide any information that could assist in the investigation.

“The police are working with the military and local vigilantes to apprehend the suspects, believed to be IPOB or ESN members.

“The commissioner of police has appealed for public assistance in the investigation,” Okoye added.
