Algeria’s head coach Vladimir Petkovic conceded his team’s inferiority after Nigeria’s dominant 2-0 quarter-final win in the Africa Cup of Nations, praising the Super Eagles’ relentless performance that ended the Desert Foxes’ unbeaten streak in the 2025 tournament.
Second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams propelled Nigeria into the semi-finals at Marrakech Stadium on Saturday, where they will face hosts Morocco in Rabat on Wednesday.
Petkovic, reflecting on the defeat, said: “Do I have to tell the truth, or should I be political (about the match)? Nigeria deserved to win this match. They were better than us. It was difficult to get into this match. We were hit left and right.”
The Bosnian tactician acknowledged Algeria’s struggles against Nigeria’s intensity, noting his side had not conceded a goal before the encounter.
Osimhen, named man of the match for his goal and assist, looked ahead to the semi-final: “We know they (Morocco) have a lot of quality players and a lot of support in front of their massive crowds, of course, but I don’t think we are the kind of team that is timid about any opponents. We will give our absolute best and try to win.”
The result keeps Nigeria unbeaten in Morocco, positioning them two wins from a fourth AFCON title, while Algeria’s campaign ends short of a third crown after triumphs in 1990 and 2019.
