Tinubu Backs Nigeria’s Bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games as ‘Dream’ to Realise

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday rallied support for Nigeria’s ambitious bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, calling it a “dream” that must become reality and a historic milestone for Africa.

In a message posted on his official X account, Tinubu emphasised that no African nation has ever hosted the multi-sport event, which brings together athletes from dozens of former British territories every four years. “It’s time for Africa,” he declared, urging the Commonwealth to “complete the circle of unity” by awarding the Games to Nigeria.

The president’s endorsement came as a Nigerian delegation, led by Shehu Dikko, president of the Nigeria Sports Commission, and Director-General Bukola Olopade, presented the country’s final bid to the Games’ evaluation committee. The bid centres on Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, which last hosted a major continental event — the African Games — in 2003.

Tinubu’s statement underscores Nigeria’s determination to showcase its progress on the global stage, boost its sports infrastructure and elevate Africa’s voice within the Commonwealth. The multi-nation grouping, comprising 56 member states, has seen the Games rotate primarily among wealthier hosts, with the next edition slated for Glasgow, Scotland, in March 2026 after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew over ballooning costs.

Nigeria first signalled interest in April by meeting the deadline for expressions of interest. The Nigerian Olympic Committee hailed the potential hosting as a chance to “invigorate its sports culture” and enhance the country’s international profile. It marks a redemption effort after losing the 2014 Games bid to Glasgow.

The Commonwealth Games Federation has yet to announce a decision on the 2030 host, with Nigeria competing against other contenders. Success would make history, fulfilling Tinubu’s vision of an event that “sends a powerful message that Africa is vital to the future of the Commonwealth.”
