The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has a new substantive Chairman following the unanimous approval of Professor Joash Amupitan by the National Council of State (NCS).
The appointment comes as the electoral body prepares for the 2027 general elections and seeks to consolidate its institutional leadership.
Professor Amupitan succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who recently concluded his two-term, ten-year tenure as the head of the commission. Following Yakubu’s departure, Mrs. May Agbamuche had served briefly as the Acting National Chairman.
The appointment of Professor Amupitan, a widely recognized academic, is subject to confirmation by the Senate, the final constitutional requirement for the position

The unanimous decision by the NCS, comprising the President, Vice-President, all former presidents and heads of the government, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and all state governors, signals broad political consensus regarding the choice.
