Tinubu Shocks Nation with Lifetime Salary Package for Retiring Senior Officers

In a move set to redefine public service rewards in Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a groundbreaking policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat on Thursday. The minister described the decision as a bold step under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to boost officer welfare and strengthen institutional performance across agencies under the ministry.

According to a statement signed by DCF PO Abraham, NPRO/Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, the minister expressed deep gratitude to the President for “unwavering support,” insisting that the new package would transform morale and commitment within the security and emergency services.

“We have successfully cleared the long-standing backlog of promotions,” Tunji-Ojo said, noting that over 50,000 officers had been elevated within the last two years. He further explained that future promotions will be based strictly on capacity and performance.

As part of wider reforms, the minister revealed that a world-class Fire Academy is under construction to rival global training institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy, while new training manuals have already been introduced to upgrade standards across agencies.

The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to prioritise officers’ mental health, as well as calls for stronger private sector partnerships to modernise firefighting operations and infrastructure in Nigeria.

Observers say the lifetime salary policy could have sweeping implications for the nation’s public service structure, igniting debates on sustainability and equity even as it is celebrated by senior officers.
