# The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze has commissioned a one-kilometre access road at the Naval Outpost Onitsha, constructed by philanthropist, Chief Anthony Obele
The road was constructed in conjunction with the Naval Outpost Onitsha, as part of efforts to strengthen security infrastructure and improve connectivity in the area.
In his remarks, the Speaker who represented Governor Chukwuma Soludo, appreciated the benefactor for the gesture and for aligning with the state government’s vision of a livable and prosperous homeland.
Rt. Hon. Udeze noted that the road will not only enhance the operational efficiency of the Naval Outpost Onitsha but also ease movement for residents and businesses within the area.
The Speaker reiterated his administration’s commitment to partnering with private individuals and organizations to accelerate infrastructural development across the state, emphasizing that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of development.
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral S.D. Ibrahim commended the benefactor for what he described as a timely and strategic intervention, explaining that improved access roads are critical to rapid response, logistics movement, and overall operational readiness of naval personnel.
# The entire Igwe in-Council, Ndi Nze na Ozo, Ogboji Town Union and the entire Ogboji Community have performed the last Ofala Outing of Igwe F.O Iyioku (Oranyere Eze II) of Ogboji in Orumba South LGA, Anambra State.
The event took place at the traditional ruler’s palace with people from all walks of life including the members of Anambra South Traditional Rulers Council, President Generals of Communities, ndi Onowu, clerics, prominent sons and daughters of Ogboji community coming to pay their last respects to the late traditional ruler.
In a goodwill message, the first son of the deceased, Prince Max Obi Iyioku noted that his father was a great man, full of intelligence yet humble and contented with what he had even as he appreciated all that graced the occasion.
He emphasized that the 19 years of peaceful reign of Igwe Iyioku brought development to the town, describing the last Ofala as a celebration and thanksgiving for the life of the monarch
# The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has appointed Mr. Aloysius Emeka Attah, Anambra State Correspondent of The Sun Newspaper, as Director of Information and Public Relations.
The Council also approved the a Principal Officer and 6 other key officers following vacancies in the office of the University Librarian and six Directorates.
The appointments were ratified during the Council’s 21st Emergency Meeting held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Council Chambers of the University, after a rigorous and merit-based selection process.
The newly appointed officers are: Prof. Eze Jacintha Ukamaka (University Librarian), Dr. Jane Ezeonu (Director of Medical Services), Engr. Ibe Obinna (Director of Works Services), Akuma Paschal (Director of Procurement), Engr. Ezeokafor Lawrence (Director of Physical Planning), Mr. Obi Collins (Chief Safety Officer)
All appointments took effect from April 17, 2026, and are for a single tenure of five (5) years.
# A delegation from the Nigerian Army has sensitized a cross-section of Anambra youths on its ongoing 91 Regular Recruits Intake exercise for trades and non-tradesmen and women, for which applications will end on 17th May, 2026.
Addressing the youths at the Ministry of Youth office in Awka, the leader of the Army delegation, Brigadier General Uche Nnabuihe, who expressed concern over low interest from the South-East, explained that as of April 7, before the nationwide sensitization, out of 38,000 applications received when the recruitment portal opened, only one hundred and seventeen applications came from Anambra, noting that the sensitization was aimed at encouraging more youth participation in the state and the South-East.
Among the traditional rulers present at the event, Igwe Michael Okeke-Uche of Enugwu-Agidi, who commended the welfare system of the Nigerian Army, encouraged young people in the state to show interest in joining the service to ensure that Anambra and the South-East are well represented.

# Traditional rulers in Anambra State have taken a decisive and united stand against gender-based violence, declaring an era of firm cultural reforms and strengthened community protection mechanisms.
The event held at the Light House in Awka, brought together royal fathers, religious leaders, and development partners.
The gathering under the theme, “From Custodians to Champions: Redefining Culture for Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Community Protection,”
also marked the formal signing of The Royal Mandate for Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Community Protection,” a pledge that repositions traditional institutions as active protectors of human dignity across communities.
Reading the royal declaration on behalf of the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, the Council Secretary, Igwe Charles Agbala, stated that the commitment signifies a transformation in the role of monarchs from custodians of tradition to champions of justice and safety, and explained that by signing the pledge, traditional rulers have resolved to redefine culture to protect the vulnerable, ensure respect for human dignity, and promote awareness of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law across their kingdoms.
The Monarch emphasized that no perpetrator will find refuge under the guise of tradition, as culture must now reflect safety and respect for every individual.
# The Head of Department, Fire Service, Anambra State, Mr. Chiketa Chukwudi, has emphasized that safety is a collective responsibility that must be taken seriously in homes, workplaces, and business environments.
He made this assertion while addressing staff of the Ministry of Power and Water Resources in Awka, stressing that no individual or organization can function effectively without prioritizing safety measures.
According to Mr. Chukwudi, the first step during a fire incident is to raise an alarm to alert others. This should be followed by the immediate evacuation of everyone from the premises to a designated assembly point, where a headcount should be conducted to ensure no one is left inside the building.
He advised that the fire service should then be contacted promptly. He urged members of the public to assist by reporting fire outbreaks, even when they are not directly affected, noting that timely intervention can save lives and property.
# A routine morning turned tragic in Anambra State as a devastating road accident claimed the life of a commercial tricycle driver.
The fatal incident unfolded at the busy Immigration Junction along the Awka–Enugu Expressway.
A fully loaded Mack LPG tanker reportedly lost control after suffering a sudden brake failure—triggering a nightmare on wheels.
Eyewitnesses say the unsuspecting tricycle driver was trying to navigate through a traffic diversion caused by ongoing road construction when disaster struck. The out-of-control tanker barreled forward, crushing him instantly and leaving no chance for survival.
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived swiftly, but the damage had already been done. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, his remains later evacuated to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital morgue in Awka.
