* A former Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Prof Obiajulu Obikeze, has advised the Bola Tinubu Government to arrest, try and prosecute the persons involved in the controversial petroleum subsidy regime to bring about the desired change in Nigeria. Obikeze who gave the advice while featuring in a media programme in Awka recently, challenged the government to come up with a simple explanation to Nigerians on what the petroleum subsidy was, what it was for, and who were involved.
* The Chairman, Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi during the weekend, inducted 2023 pioneer class of seventy-five players from Aguata academy for Under-13 and Under-17 categories. Iloenyosi while congratulating the Aguata Football Academy (AFA) players for being selected among many who indicated interest, reminded them that the road to fame is not easy but is achievable through discipline, self determination and hard work. He thanked the parents and Ndi Aguata for their support towards the success of the project.
* eleven members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), have been arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State Capital. The NULGE members were arraigned on a 6-count charge by the Anambra State Police in a matter between them and the Commissioner of Police in the state. They are being arraigned for allegedly conspiring to commit felony, forgery of union letterhead, malicious damage of NULGE property, and for placing the Union President, Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe, under fear of physical injury and anxiety of being trailed by gunmen.
* The Immediate past member that represented Anaocha one State Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Ebele Leonard Ejiofor, has faulted the Federal Government of Nigeria’s proposed 8,000 Naira Monthly Palliative Measure geared towards cushioning the effects of the fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians, describing it as corruption, as well as an insult to the masses. Hon Ejiofor who stated this in Awka, said this was the same way they announced that they went round the markets to share 10,000 Naira to petty traders, even as he acknowledged that he was yet to see anyone who received the said 10, 000 Naira previously mapped out to be shared to market men and women, noting that the same scenario played out during COVID-19 upon all the billions brought out for that purpose.
* The publisher of Orient Daily newspaper, Mr. Godwin Chukwunenye Ezeemo has served eviction notice to staff of the company residents at its Charity Estate staff quarters behind the government house, Awka, Anambra State capital.
ANN gathered that the notice dated May 31, 2023 was pasted on the walls at the staff quarters on June 20, 2023, amidst mounting arrears of unpaid salaries and other entitlements as well as speculation that the company had been shutdown permanently by Mr Ezeemo.
* The Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) has rained eulogies and encomiums on the President-General of Umueri community, Chief Dr. Johnny Metchie for singlehandedly sponsoring breast cancer surgery of one Mrs. Amaechi Ilona, a mother of three children. Mrs.Ilona who is the daughter of Mr. Daniel Nnoruka of Uhualor village Ihembosi Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been battling with the said ailment for far too long due to lack of money to seek medical care.
* In a bid to boost industrialization and economic growth, Anambra State has unveiled the “Made in Anambra Pan African Export Programme, 2023.” The pre-launch for the commencement of the project was held in Awka, Anambra State recently with the aim to encourage leading industries in the state to strategically export their products to 54 African countries, taking advantage of the vast market of approximately 1.2 billion people with an estimated value of $3.4 trillion.
* The choice of the commercial city of Onitsha for a marathon christened, Onitsha City Marathon, OCM, has been described as an event that will change the narratives of the city and the orientation for the residents. This was stated by the chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Chief Patrick Estate Onyedum, while speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the Race Partners at Onitsha recently. Onyedum said that Onitsha, being a commercial city, would experience a breath of fresh air with the international marathon that would show that everything was not about money
* Hawkers of different goods and wheelbarrow pushers operating within and around Eke Awka Market have been lamenting the harassment and multiple levies imposed upon them by miscreants in the market on daily basis despite the order of the Anambra State Governor, Prof ChukwumaSoludo, late last year. The wheelbarrow pushers and hawkers said they were forced to pay N600 daily, and N1, 600 every Saturday as levies
