# Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has banned with immediate effect, all forms of orchestration, celebration, or “signing-off activities by final year students in connection with final examinations on all University Campuses/Premises.
A statement by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah said management decision was predicated on recurring incidents of chaos, violence, vandalism, and disruption of academic and administrative activities associated with such events.
“Management is also concerned about the infiltration of unauthorized persons onto campus during these activities, which poses a serious threat to the safety and security of students, staff, and University property. In fulfillment of its statutory obligation to maintain order, protect lives, and safeguard property, Management considers such activities unacceptable and a breach of University regulations”
The Varsity spokesman disclosed that any student found to be involved in, organizing, or participating in any form of “signing-off”-or related activities shall be liable to severe disciplinary sanctions, including but not limited to rustication and withdrawal in line with the Students’ Handbook.
“Any person who is not a bonafide student or staff of the University found on University premises in connection with such activities shall be arrested and prosecuted for breach of peace, trespass, and disorderly conduct”
The University Registrar, Dr. Chinenye GlorIa Okeke in an internal memo to the university community had already communicated to the students to focus on their academic responsibilities and also asked staff, students, and members of the public to report any planned or ongoing act of misconduct to the Chief Safety Officer, Dean of Student Affairs, or the nearest University Authority for immediate action.
# The Executive Director of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), Dr. Hilary Okeke, has called on mothers to practise exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months to ensure children have adequate nutrition and stronger immunity against diseases.
Addressing pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers at the Maternal and Child Healthcare Clinic, Ogidi, to mark World Breastfeeding Week, Dr. Okeke, who thanked the Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Chief Stanley Nkwoka, for partnering with ANSACA on the programme, educated the women that breast milk is the first vaccine given to a baby upon birth, and urged them to maintain exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and to ignore tales spread by people regarding breast milk and breastfeeding in order to maintain a healthy life for both child and mother.
According to Dr. Okeke, data shows that about seventy percent of women in Nigeria do not observe exclusive breastfeeding, and he urged mothers and opinion leaders in the community to encourage women to register early for antenatal care when pregnant, and to start their children on breast milk immediately upon birth to meet the golden hour.
He appealed to employers of labour and institutions to encourage the practice of the baby-friendly initiative in their various workplaces by giving reproductive women who give birth six months of maternity leave.
Dr. Okeke informed women that being HIV positive should not deny one the joy of motherhood or a child a healthy future, as long as a pregnant woman who is HIV positive reports for antenatal care on time and is compliant with antiretroviral drugs, she will get to a level where she will not transmit the disease and can breastfeed a child properly without the child contracting HIV.
He appreciated Governor Chukwuma Soludo for doing something extraordinary in the health sector, which has placed Anambra State above other states in Nigeria in terms of health, and for providing pregnant women with free antenatal and delivery services in general hospitals across the state, even as he congratulated the Governor’s wife, Dr.
Nonye Soludo, for winning the 2026 BudgiT Active Citizens Award in Health Activism.
# The Anambra State Police Command on Monday 10th August 2026, announces the assumption of duty of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, as the new Commissioner of Police in the State.
CP Nnanna Oji Ama takes over the leadership of the Command following the retirement of the immediate past Commissioner of Police who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
Upon assumption of office, CP Nnanna Oji Ama expressed his commitment to consolidating the existing security gains in Anambra State and strengthening collaboration among the Police, other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
The CP further assured the people of Anambra State of the Command’s renewed determination to protect lives and property, prevent and combat crime, uphold the rule of law, and ensure a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and businesses across the State.
# The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the Dunukofia, Njikoka and Anaocha Federal Constituency, Chief Chukwudi Oli, has urged women of Enugu-Ukwu community to remain united and continue to promote peace, love and good moral values in their homes and community.
Oli made the call when he attended the annual August meeting of women of Enugu-Ukwu at Obu Umunri Hall over the weekend, where he joined them in celebrating their unity, cultural heritage and contributions to community development.
Addressing the women, Oli described them as pillars of the family and important agents of peace, unity and positive transformation in society.
He urged them to use their positions within the family to promote understanding, tolerance and genuine love, stressing that peaceful homes are the foundation of a peaceful community.
The House of Representatives candidate also encouraged the women to serve as good role models to their children, noting that children learn largely from the conduct and character they observe at home.
He called on mothers to demonstrate good morals, respect, honesty, discipline, kindness and love so that their children would grow into responsible citizens and worthy representatives of their families.
Oli maintained that the strength of any community depends largely on the quality of its families, and appealed to the women to avoid unnecessary divisions and continue to support one another.
According to him, a united womenfolk has the capacity to positively influence families and contribute significantly to the peace, progress and development of the wider community. He also commended the women for sustaining their annual August meeting, describing it as an important platform for strengthening relationships, preserving cultural values and discussing issues affecting families and community development.
# Leaders of the Hausa and Northern communities in Anambra State have dismissed allegations that Mr Peter Obi, candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), discriminated against northerners or ordered the demolition of a mosque during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State.
The community leaders, who spoke with journalists in Awka and Onitsha, described the allegations as politically motivated and intended to damage Obi’s reputation ahead of the 2027 general election.
They said that, contrary to the claims being circulated, northerners in Anambra enjoyed a cordial relationship with the Obi administration and benefited from several of its programmes, including free education, agricultural loans and sponsorship for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
The leaders included the Secretary of the Hausa Community in Onitsha and Secretary of the Northern Community in Anambra and Delta States, Mr Mahmud Ibrahim; the traditional ruler of the Hausa Community in Awka, Alhaji Garba Haruna; and the Chairman of the Northern Community in Anambra State, Alhaji Gidado Sidikki.
Ibrahim, who said he had served as secretary of the community for several years, explained that the mosque at the centre of the controversy was demolished before Obi became governor.
# Residents of Anambra State have continued to express their opinions following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s pronouncement of zero tolerance and a “Stop Work” directive against individuals and developers building structures on waterways, wetlands, and drainage channels, and his declaration of an environmental emergency.
A town planner, Chief Ejiofor Nwokike, attributed the erection of illegal buildings to unauthorized real estate developers and the illegal reclaiming of wet lands or building directly over primary drainage outfalls without approval from the relevant authority, pointing out that once a house is built on waterways, the building definitely blocks the drainage system and the flood will force its way through any available avenue, thereby causing environmental hazards for residents.
He advised people to always engage experts when building their houses to avoid disastrous effects, and urged residents and developers to always verify land titles and check with the State Physical Planning Authority before making any purchase.
On her part, Miss Adaolisa Egbue told the state citizenry and contractors building on natural waterways to desist from such acts as they cause catastrophic flooding that destroys public infrastructure, displaces families, and threatens human life, using Owelle-Ajah, Obosi as a case study.
Miss Egbue advised residents of the state to abide by the laws of the land and commended Governor Soludo for the ongoing rehabilitation of some strategic roads in the state.
Baring his mind, Engineer Adol Ezenwelu commended the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, for his doggedness in discharging his duties, especially at Odoakpu, Onitsha, where he ordered the contractor building on the drainage to stop work.
# The Management of Solution Football Club of Anambra State invites both new and existing players to its open screening exercise ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.
The week-long exercise will take place from Thursday, August 13, 2026 to Thursday, August 20, 2026 at the Awka City Stadium, Anambra State

# The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), ABS Awka Chapel, has expressed its readiness to partner with the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Anambra State Chapter, to give voice to the voiceless and defend vulnerable members of society.
The Chairman of the NUJ ABS Awka Chapel, Comrade Emmanuel Okonkwo, disclosed this when he led other executives of the chapel on a courtesy visit to the Chairperson of FIDA Anambra State Chapter, Barrister Amara Mojeke, in her office in Awka.
Okonkwo described journalists as the mouthpiece of the people, particularly the downtrodden, while noting that FIDA plays a critical role as a defender of the defenceless.
He said the proposed partnership would help both organisations strengthen efforts to protect the rights of less privileged people who lack the resources and support to seek justice.
Responding, Mojeke congratulated Okonkwo and his team on their new positions and expressed her interest in partnering with the NUJ ABS Awka Chapel.
She highlighted some of the achievements of FIDA Anambra under her leadership, including securing justice for downtrodden residents, resolving family disputes involving inheritance and marital issues, organising free medical outreaches, campaigning against child labour and human trafficking, providing grassroots legal-rights education, and conducting charity outreaches.
Mojeke, who is also the Head of the Sexual, Gender and Inheritance Unit of the Anambra State Ministry of Justice, said FIDA has a team of lawyers who handle cases on a pro bono basis as part of the organisation’s charitable activities.
She urged vulnerable residents in need of legal assistance to take advantage of FIDA’s free legal services by visiting its office around the Anambra State House of Assembly axis in Awka.
# The newly elected President of Onitsha Sports Club, Chief Titus Adirika, has pledged to restore the club’s glory, rehabilitate its facilities and revive sporting activities while promoting unity among members.
Adirika made the pledge on after his election and handover ceremony. He urged members to support the new administration in its efforts to reposition the club and restore its pride of place.
The President said members had taken a bold step toward better management, expressing confidence in the new executive, which he described as a team of professionals and reliable members.
Adirika said the administration would promote discipline, integrity, respect, honour and sportsmanship, adding that the rehabilitation of facilities damaged during the crisis would be given priority.
# Education development in Okpuno Community, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has received a boost as the construction of a six classroom block at Udodimma Primary School, Nodu Okpuno, progresses.
The project, facilitated by the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Victor Umeh, is designed to improve the learning environment by addressing the shortage of classroom space and providing pupils with better educational facilities. The project also includes the provision of classroom desks.
When completed, the new classroom block is expected to ease congestion, enhance teaching and learning, and improve access to quality education for pupils in the community.
