* With the announcement of Saturday, 28th September, 2024, as the date for Local Government election by Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, different parties are positioning for victory, as aspirants intensify their efforts ahead of party primaries. In Nnewi North, the dynamics are already changing, especially in the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), as aspirants in the party continue to consult stakeholders and members of the party. Some members of the party have approached Mrs. Uche Nwokenagu, the wife of the former APGA Ward Chairman in Uruagu Nnewi Ward 1, late, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwokenagu (Eze B), for the Vice Chairmanship position.
* A former member of Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Obinna Emeneka has called on women to use their August meetings to initiate reforms that will entrench a morally sound society.
Emeneka who is the immediate past member that represented Anambra East Constituency in the State House of Assembly, while wishing women in the state fruitful deliberations noted that the yearly August meetings by women, especially those from the southeast region of the country, has become a strong socioeconomic development tool to enhance humanity.
* The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command has pledged to provide a robust security strategy to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for the upcoming local government elections in the state, in support of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC). Commandant Maku Olatunde, made this pledge at the State Command Headquarters Awka. Maku while speaking when he received the newly inaugurated ANSIEC members led by the State Chief Electoral Officer and Chairman, Genevieve Osakwe Esq, on a courtesy visit, declared that the NSCDC is fully prepared to provide adequate security coverage for the elections, including the deployment of personnel to polling units, collation centers, and other strategic locations.
* Anambra ministry of women affairs and the Awka Capital Development Authority (ACTDA) has launched operation against syndicates using children to beg for alms in Awka capital city. The operation was carried out arresting about 16 child beggars, including adults.
* Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the House of Representatives member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, has expressed concerns over the hasty amendment of the Anambra State Electoral Law by the Anambra State House of Assembly. He described the move as a promotion of undemocratic tactics aimed at frustrating opposition parties in the state.
* Nnewi-born philanthropist and business mogul, Dr. Kingsley Chukwukeme, has set aside millions of naira to sponsor a football tournament for Nnewi Youth Forum. The football tournament is part of activities to mark the 2024 Nnewi Cultural Festival, popularly known as Afiaolu Nnewi Festival. The sponsor of the tournament, Dr. Kingsley Chukwukeme, who is the CEO of Nwaguatahihia Motors Limited, United State of America, has set aside millions for the football competition, both for cash prizes, jerseys and other logistics.
* The urgent intervention of the Anambra State government has been sought on the age-old land boundary disputes between some communities in Ayamelum local government area of the State. A concerned citizen of Ayamelum, Comrade Onuzulike John Udemezue made the appeal in an open letter penned to the State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo. According to Udemezue, the long-standing dispute, which has been a source of communal crisis and bloodshed in the area in recent years, has cost many lives and property of Ayamelum people.
* Three Awka-based legal practitioners in Anambra State have been elevated to the pretigous rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN). They are among the list of 87 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria recently announced by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwola.
The three legal practionners elevated include Clems Azika, Tochukwu Nweke, and Chienye Okafor
* Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) has hailed Governor Chukwuma Soludo for constituting the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, ahead of the conduct of local government elections in the state. The National President of the Association, Hon Barrister Titus Nnabuike Akpudo, who gave the commendation while briefing Journalists at his office in Awka, said the development was part of the governor’s campaign promises to extend the dividend of democracy to the grassroots. Speaking further, Barr. Akpudo said the development is worth celebrating, especially for those at the grassroots.
* Member representing Anambra East/West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Udogala Anekwe, has commended women for their tasking responsibilities in the society. The lawmaker who spoke through his Media Adviser, Mr.Odikpo Mmadubueze, explained that the women in Africa were saddled with enormous responsibilities which include taking care of children and other domestic duties performed by women at home front coupled with working for the economic survival of their families.
