* The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has described Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo as a virtuous woman whose passion, tenderness and charity have contributed immensely towards the upliftment of the living conditions of the womenfolk and downtrodden in the State. Felicitating the wife of Anambra State Governor Mrs. Soludo on behalf of the State Legislature as she marks her 54th birthday, Rt. Hon. Udeze through a release signed by Mr. Emma Madu, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, expressed satisfaction that the wife of the Governor has impacted positively on the lives of the people through her pet project”Healthy Living With Nonye Soludo”.
* The 23rd Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) has approved the release of the sum of One Hundred and Twelve Million, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Six Thousand, Thirty-Seven Naira (N112, 856, 037. 00) for the reconstruction of the dilapidated Uga Junction Federal Road in favor of GEMSAG Integrated Ltd. The work will be completed within a period of three (3) months from the date of the payment of the mobilization fee. According a release signed by Anambra Commissioner for Information, Sir. Paul Nwosu, ANSEC also approved the release of the sum of Eighty-Nine Million, Nine Hundred and Eighty-Four Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifteen Naira, Six Kobo (N89, 984, 715 .06) for the supply and installation of 115 Solar Street lights at the State Secretariat, Awka. The contract was awarded to Kolc Ventures after a competitive bidding.
* Anambra Assembly at plenary on Wednesday, confirmed members of Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC). The Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Okoye who is the Chairman House Committee on Screening and Election Matters while giving a report, stated that the Committee invited and had an interaction with the ANSIEC members and that the answers gotten were satisfactory. The Deputy Speaker and members of his committee recommended that the ANSIEC members be screened and confirmed. The confirmed members of the Commission are; Magistrate Chinelo Genevieve Osakwe (Chairman), Mrs. Bernadine Obande (Member), Barr. Osita Cyril Igbokwe (Member), Sir Chinedu Anthony Nnalue (Member), Mrs. Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh (Member) and Mr. John Emeka Okeke (Member).
* A Nigerian Naval Officer from Ogbunike, Anambra State, Lieutenant David Chukwudera Okafor has been selected among internationally recognized maritime professionals to serve as a judge for the 2023-2024 International Ship Design Competition. Okafor is to design the 2023-2024 terms of reference for a RoPax ferry for the Niger River waterway in Nigeria that can accommodate 150-200 passengers and space for cargoes and 15-20 four-wheelers vehicles (which could include lorries and trucks) to ply from Onitsha Jetty to Idah Jetty and from Onitsha Jetty to Ndoni Jetty on the Niger River to address the issue of unsafe transportation of passengers and cargos in the region. The competition, being organized by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association is aimed at preventing ferry fatalities and expanding safe ferries globally. It was initiated in response to the tragic record of ferry fatalities in parts of developing world.
* The newly installed Rotary District Governor, Rtn. Nkemdili Nnonyelu has outlined seven areas of focus for the year, which include peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, and maternal and child health and Improvement of the environment. Nnonyelu, a professor in the Sociology and Anthropology Department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Anambra State, while speaking at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Awka recently during his installation as the eighth Governor of the Rotary International, District 9142, appreciated Prof. Chukwuma Soludo on his giant stride.
* The Head of Department Planning, Research and Statistics (PRS) Ministry of Health, Anambra State, Mrs. Edith Nwachukwu, has tasked the Gender Perspective and Social Development Centre (GPSDC) to provide data to back up its advocacy for improved domestic funding for tuberculosis in the area.
Nwachukwu made the call when the GPSDC team paid an advocacy visit to her office as part of its Fund TB project in Anambra State. Represented by the Planning Officer One, Mrs. Chizoba Mbanefo, Nwachukwu appreciated the concerns of the NGO and expressed readiness to work with it to achieve greater funding for the TB Campaign in the area.
* The Chairman Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Homeland Affairs and Boundary Matters and member representing Ayamelum State Constituency Hon. Mmaduaburochukwu Bernard Udemezue has stated without mincing words that the motion moved by a colleague for the state government to acquire lands for agricultural purposes is not the most pressing issue in the state.
Udemezue who was the only lawmaker that opposed the motion during plenary said establishment of agricultural and industrial hubs were not the insecurity ravaging the state, insisting that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo should battle unknown gunmen camping in the forests and bushes where the lands would be acquired.
* The Justice Development and Peace Caritas (JDPC) Nnewi, a faith-based non-governmental organization has called for an increased patronage of health care facilities and programs initiated by Anambra State government towards enhancing quality healthcare in the state.
JDPC described as poor, the attitude and behavior of citizens towards making themselves available to access government’s health programs particularly in the primary healthcare facilities. In their recent report released following the 2024 First Round Optimized Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) week in the state, JDPC said despite successful community engagements, challenges such as low citizen trust in healthcare services and inadequate health data sets still persist.
* Anambra House of Assembly at plenary observed a minute silence for late Mr. Obidiegwu Chukwukadibia PeterPaul, a staff of the State Legislature. late Obidiegwu who hails from Akpo community in Aguata local government area of Anambra State, died on the 23rd of July 2024, after a brief illness. A condolence register has been opened for the tribute of the deceased who until his death was a Senior Legislative Officer, and a staff of the office of the Clerk. A minute of silence was observed at plenary in honour of late Obidiegwu who died at the age of 45..
* The former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano and his family have commiserated with former commissioner for Works in the state, Engr Marcel Ifejiofor over the passing of his wife, Adaobi. Ifejiofor who worked under Obiano during his time as governor lost his wife to death recently.
