# Two commercial trucks, a Mercedes 911 truck, and a Mark Tanker truck belonging to Shafa Energy, were involved in a fatal road traffic crash opposite Jezco Filling Station along the Awka-Enugu Expressway.
An eyewitness account revealed that due to ongoing road construction, the road was partially blocked.
The driver of the Mercedes truck, traveling at high speed, suddenly applied the brakes. The Mark Tanker truck behind crashed into its rear, causing significant damage.
Following the impact, the Mercedes truck was crushed, and a fire subsequently broke out, resulting in an explosion.
In a release by FRSC Spokesperson, SRC. Margaret Onabe, four persons were involved in the crash, all male adults.
Unfortunately, 2 male adults were killed in the incident, and 2 other male adults sustained various degrees of injury.
“The injured victims were rescued and immediately taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka by good Samaritans before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team.
“Efforts are currently ongoing towards the removal of the dead, who were trapped and burnt beyond recognition.
“The weather at the time of the crash was dark, and the road pavement was asphalt. The suspected cause of the crash was attributed to Speed Violation and Loss of Control, SPV(LOC).
“In response, the FRSC rescue team was on the ground within 10 minutes of the crash to manage traffic and ensure free flow of vehicles on the route’. Onabe stated.
The Sector Commander, Anambra Sector Command, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, while commiserating with the families of the deceased, strongly advised motorists to avoid speeding, especially at construction zones, and to obey traffic regulations.
Asekhauno further called on the relevant authorities to speed up the ongoing construction on the other lane and open it up to avoid double-way movement on a single lane, which poses danger to road users.
The Corps reaffirms its commitment to making the roads safer for all motorists. Members of the public are enjoined to call the FRSC toll-free line 122 in case of emergencies.
# ‎The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, has called for an end to environmental recklessness in Idemili North Local Government Area, urging residents and stakeholders to take greater responsibility for protecting their communities from flooding, erosion and indiscriminate waste disposal.

‎Dr. Aguiyi made the call at an environmental stakeholders’ summit held at the Idemili North Local Government Headquarters and organised by the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka.
‎The Commissioner attributed the worsening flooding and erosion in parts of Obosi, Nkpor, Ogidi and other communities partly to harmful human activities, including blocked drainage channels, indiscriminate waste disposal and other forms of environmental abuse.

He warned residents against continuing practices that degrade the environment while expecting government or divine intervention to address the resulting consequences. According to him, responsible environmental practices by residents must complement government efforts to effectively tackle flooding, erosion and other environmental challenges.
‎Dr. Aguiyi urged the Local Government Chairman, traditional institutions, town unions and community leaders to take ownership of environmental protection by establishing functional environmental committees at the grassroots and supporting effective enforcement of environmental regulations.

‎He reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to the fifth pillar of the Solution Agenda, Environment and Urban Regeneration, noting that the government remains determined to build a cleaner, greener and more resilient Anambra State.

‎The commissioner also cautioned residents against consuming untreated borehole and well water following recent flooding, warning that some affected water sources might have been contaminated. He advised residents to boil or properly treat their water pending the retesting and analysis of affected water sources.
‎Dr. Aguiyi further reminded stakeholders that the state government’s newly declared State of Emergency on the environment would commence on Aug. 22. He urged communities to seize the opportunity as a turning point by clearing blocked drainage channels, improving waste management and eliminating practices that contribute to flooding and erosion.
‎He stressed that environmental protection could not be achieved by government alone, calling for sustained collaboration among government agencies, traditional institutions, town unions, businesses and residents to safeguard the environment and protect communities from preventable environmental disasters.
# Stakeholders across Anambra State have resolved to support the adoption and domestication of Nigeria’s National Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM) Policy, calling it a critical step toward protecting the health, dignity, and education of adolescent girls.
The resolution was reached at a stakeholders’ workshop organised by the Development Centre for Orientation, Discovery and Empowerment (DeCODE) through its Menstrual Ease for Girls (ME4Girls) Project, with funding support from Rise Up Together.
The workshop brought together representatives of the Ministries of Education, Health, and Women Affairs and Social Welfare, the Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC), education authorities, development partners, civil society organisations, professional bodies, schools, youth groups, and the media.
Participants reviewed findings from the ME4Girls Situation Assessment, examined the National Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management Policy, and developed practical strategies for its implementation in Anambra.
A major outcome of the meeting was the decision to establish the Anambra Menstrual Health Advocacy Coalition, a multi-stakeholder platform that will coordinate advocacy, policy engagement, and implementation efforts across the state.
According to the workshop communiqué, stakeholders agreed that stronger collaboration among relevant government ministries and non-state actors is essential to ensure girls have access to menstrual health education, gender-responsive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, and supportive school environments.
# A Professor of Public Administration, Jude Okafor, has urged Nigerians to look beyond blaming political leaders for poor governance and examine the role citizens they play in sustaining the country’s political system.
Okafor, the immediate past Head of the Department of Political Science at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said the quality of leadership in any society was closely linked to the conduct, choices and attitude of its citizens.
Speaking on the relationship between leadership and followership, he argued that Nigerians must recognise that responsible governance requires not only good leaders but also responsible and active citizens who are willing to demand accountability.
He particularly criticised vote buying, warning that citizens who accept money from politicians in exchange for their votes weaken their moral authority to question the conduct of those they elect.
# The leadership of Ozuu Village, Ndiukwuenu in Orumba North Local Government Area has cried out to the Anambra State Government to intervene over the illegal arrests, detention, and intimidation of their members by the Enugu State Government through its forest guards.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after a meeting held over the matter, the leader of Ozuu Village, Chief Onyekachukwu Onwurah, lamented that members of the village are being illegally arrested, detained, and in some cases kidnapped from their farms, while others are killed, and called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to come to their aid and to prevail on his
Enugu State counterpart to put an end to the incursion.
He wondered why members of the village are being subjected to such inhuman treatment when the boundaries between the two states are properly delineated and the Ndiukwuenu community has historically been in Anambra State.
Chief Onwurah said some members of the village have been arrested without legal representation, and are mostly left to languish in prison by their oppressors.
In their separate speeches, the Secretary General, Ndiukwuenu Town Union, Mr. Tochukwu Eketelu, and the Secretary, Ozuu Village Association, Prince Mathew Nwankwo, lamented the intimidation and bloodshed being experienced by their members, as they have lost loved ones.
They called for the erection of security posts or a police station in the community because their patience has been stretched thin, and they might be forced to take the law into their hands to protect members of their community.
# The Anambra State Government has called for a stronger link between budget planning, public spending and measurable results.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Chukwukadibia Okoye while speaking at a two-day Mid-Year Budget Expenditure Review Workshop for 2026 organised in collaboration with UNICEF in Awka, said the review would assess budget implementation.
Okoye maintained that the review will guide implementation during the remaining months. He described the budget as the legal framework for translating government vision into actual governance, noting that every government project and programme must be backed by the appropriation law.

‎He said the review will strengthen accountability and improve coordination across ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), particularly among civil servants who are at the heart of implementing government policies and programmes.
According to the Commissioner, the exercise would also ensure that public funds are directed towards projects and programmes capable of producing visible and lasting benefits for communities across Anambra State before the end of the year.

# ‎The Mayor of Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Hon. Chimezie James Obi, has reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting community-driven development initiatives aimed at improving the lives and wellbeing of residents.

‎Hon. Obi stated this while inspecting the ongoing dualisation of Nza Road in Ozubulu on Aug. 20, where he commended the people of Nza for their vision, unity and determination to drive the development project.

‎The Mayor noted that the dualisation of the road would significantly improve accessibility and ease movement within the community, while also creating opportunities for increased economic activities and growth.

# Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, has called on private school owners, proprietors and teachers to key into the state government’s education reforms, particularly in the areas of digital and practical learning.
Ogugua made the at a familiarisation meeting with stakeholders in the private education sector held at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka.
The Commissioner said teachers remained critical to the success of education policies, describing them as the direct link between government initiatives and the children they were designed to benefit.
According to him, while government was responsible for making policies and providing direction for the education sector, teachers had the responsibility of translating such policies into meaningful learning experiences for students.
Ogugua said the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo was committed to improving the quality of education in the state and equipping children with the skills required to compete in the global environment.
He stressed the need for stronger digital education, noting that the growing influence of technology and artificial intelligence on the job market had made it imperative to prepare students for emerging opportunities.
The Commissioner also advocated greater emphasis on practical learning, saying students should be exposed to opportunities that would enable them connect classroom knowledge with real-life experiences.
He said practical learning would help students develop their interests, discover their abilities and make informed career choices, rather than depending solely on theoretical knowledge.

# Partners implementing the Strengthening Public Accountability for Results and Knowledge (SPARK 2) project and key health stakeholders in Anambra State have adopted a community-driven approach to expand health insurance enrolment among women of child-bearing age and other vulnerable groups, with town unions, community leaders and Ward Development Committees taking centre stage in the mobilisation campaign.
The strategy was adopted at a multi-stakeholder roundtable convened under the SPARK 2 project, supported by the International Budget Partnership (IBP), where participants agreed that sustained grassroots mobilisation was critical to increasing enrolment into the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) scheme.
The meeting brought together representatives of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), National Orientation Agency (NOA), Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ASPHCDA), Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC), Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), community development organisations and traditional institutions.
Participants resolved to maximise the ongoing ward-to-ward National Identification Number (NIN) registration exercise to ensure that more women of reproductive age and other vulnerable residents obtain the identity number required for enrolment into the state health insurance scheme.
Permanent Secretary, Anambra State Ministry of Health, Dr. Obiageli Uchebo, described the mandatory NIN requirement as one of the major barriers preventing many indigent residents from benefiting from healthcare under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).
She explained that while beneficiaries are required to possess a NIN before they can be enrolled through ASHIA, many children, elderly persons and indigent residents are yet to obtain one.
# ‎The immediate past President General of Akpo Development Association (ADA), Nze Henry Dim, has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the ongoing regeneration of markets across Anambra State, describing the initiative as necessary for restoring order and improving the state’s commercial environment.
Nze Dim made the remarks during an interaction with Information Officers at Akpo, Aguata Local Government Area (LGA).
He said the governor’s interventions in infrastructure, education, healthcare, economic development, security and human capacity development had contributed to the transformation of the state.
According to him, the market regeneration programme was particularly significant because it seeks to restore major markets to their planned layouts and improve the conditions under which traders operate.
Nze Dim acknowledged that the exercise had caused difficulties for some traders, particularly those affected by demolition and relocation activities, but argued that the long term benefits of a more organised market system should be considered.
