* The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on the Prof Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources to establish standard procedures for regulation and monitor the safe inter-conversion of petrol-powered engines to natural gas engines in order to prevent mechanical explosions and associated hazards. Chief Sponsor of the motion Hon. Anthony Muobike in his submission stated that the deregulation of the petroleum industry in Nigeria, with subsequent removal of the fuel subsidy regime has caused unprecedented rise in the cost of Premium Motor Spirit commonly in use for powering automobile engines; leading to a search for readily available alternatives by local automobile manufacturers and auto mechanics.
* The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA says it is finalizing plans with the Anambra State Government to set up drug control committees in the twenty-one local government areas and the one hundred and seventy-nine communities in the state. The State Commander of the Agency, Mr. Daniel Onyishi made the revelation during a public awareness program in Awka
* The Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State, Mr. Christian Aburime has advised citizens of the state to be vigilant and proactive towards the imminent flood as announced by relevant government agencies. Aburime in a statement made available to journalists in Awka, stated that the government of Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo remains committed to the safety and well-being of the citizenry even as the state prepares to host the 2023 flood menace.
* The Anambra State Government has warned against false and misleading publications capable of inciting misunderstanding or joining the government in issues with political figures in the State. The State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, gave the warning while reacting to a publication alleging that the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Senator Tony Nwoye, is on the move to light up Aguleri community in Anambra East Local Government Area, a community already adorned with thousands of solar-powered street lights by the State Government.
* Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to as a matter of urgency direct the commissioner for works to embark on reparation of Amansea-Ebenebe Ezu bridge which is on the verge of collapsing so as to prevent the people from being cut off from other neugbouring community. Chief sponsor of the motion Hon. Chimezie Ekwunne in his submission maintained that the said road is the only major entrance to Ebenebe community through the Amansea-Ebenebe Ezu bridge road.
* A lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Peter Ekemezie has been sentenced to six months imprisonment for publishing defamatory statements against one Prof. Alex Asigbo. Ekemezie who was charged with three-counts bordering on forgery and defamation was however given an option of N300,000 fine. While delivering the judgment at an Awka Magistrates’ court, His Worship, E.C. Chukwu noted that he took into consideration that the defendant had spent one month in a psychiatric home and four months in a Correctional Centre.
* The Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Chief Patrick-Estate Onyedum has urged the new sports minister Sen. John Ewan-Enoh to pay special attention to grassroots sports development and not pursue immediate glory which often led to respiration. Chief Onyedum while speaking in Awka, Anambra state capital recently projected better days for Nigerian sports sector under president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
* A Bill for a Law to prohibit trafficking in persons, enforce and administer measures against trafficking and for related matters has been red for the second time at the Anambra state house of assembly. Majority Leader and member represenring Ekwusigo constituency Hon.
Ikenna Ofodeme at plenary on Tuesday August 29, sited order 14 rule 74 of the standing order of the house, after which he moved a motion for second reading and was seconded by the Minority Leader Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi who is representing Nnewi South two. Leading the debate Ofodeme said the bill if passed into law will prohibit human trafficking of persons and employment of children as domestic workers in Anambra state.
* Ogidi Catholic Community has celebrated one of their indigenous priests, Very Rev. Father Sabastine Emekekwue, as he marks his golden jubilee priestly anniversary. The thanksgiving mass heralding the memorable event was held at Our Lady of Assumption parish Ogidi. Rev. Father Emekekwue who is a retired Brigadier General in the Nigeria Army was ordained priest in 1973 and his pastoral activities took him to many parts of the country and beyond, having attained the rank of Brigadier General and Director Chaplaincy services, he is also the only survivor among his contemporaries.
