# The 2025 Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna prize for Ethical Journalism has been won by Anambra Sun-Newspaper Correspondent, Comrade Alloysious Attah.
Comrade Attah emerged winner with the report titled ‘Inside Anambra Troubled Communities”. He went home with One Hundred and fifty thousand naira (150,000).
While Comrade Ukpa Ewa emerged runner-up with the report titled “Why Anambra May Not Produce Female Governor Soon”. She went home with fifty thousand naira (50,000).
Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Anambra State Chapter, Man Of The Year Award, which was part of the events to mark ‘NUJ Press Week’, Prof. Okunna said the reason behind the prize is to reward Ethical Journalism.
While congratulating the winners, Okunna, who is the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Paul University Awka, and First Female Professor in Mass Communication, Sub Sahara Africa, maintained that the award is targeted at encouraging Journalists who go extra miles in getting facts and practice ethically.
# The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, hss held a one-day electoral risk management workshop for stakeholders ahead of the November 8th Anambra governorship election.
The Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, (REC), INEC, Dr Queen-Elizabeth Agwu, while addressing participants including electoral officers, security personnel and non governmental organisations, explained that the aim of the workshop was to acquaint participants with electoral risk management activities of the commission, introduce them to electoral risk management methodology, as well as expose them to the electoral risk factors peculiar to Anambra.
The Deputy Director, Intelligence, Department of State Service, Awka, Mr Shima Rhodes, in his address, commended INEC for their continued efforts in keeping Nigeria as one through a democratic process, urging the commission to intensify the sensitization campaign across the federation in order to minimize voter apathy.
In her presentation, a resource person, Dr Jennifer Ikechukwu, spoke extensively on ways to manage risk before during and after elections.
# Former Governor of Anambra State Mr. Peter Obi, has felicitated with His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Arinze, as he marks his 60th Episcopal Anniversary.
In a goodwill message, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, described the prelate as “a living witness of faith and renewal,” whose life of service and faithfulness to God continues to inspire the Church and society. He extended his felicitations not only to the Cardinal but also to the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha and the Universal Church.
Obi recalled that Cardinal Arinze was consecrated bishop on 29 August 1965 at the age of 32, making him the youngest Catholic bishop in the world at the time. His consecration came just in time for him to attend the closing session of the historic Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) in Rome. Two years later, at only 34, he was appointed Archbishop, becoming the youngest prelate and the first African to head the Archdiocese of Onitsha, one of Nigeria’s two oldest Catholic Sees.
He further noted that in 1985, Pope John Paul II created Arinze a Cardinal, a recognition of his decades of faithful service. At the Vatican, Cardinal Arinze held several senior positions, including Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, where his leadership left indelible marks in the life of the Universal Church.
Obi prayed that God would continue to bless the Cardinal with good health, strength, and more fruitful years in the Lord’s vineyard. “We remain immensely proud of him and grateful for his enduring life of service, discipline, and faith,” he added.
# Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP. Ikioye Orutugu has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of moral decadence in the society.
Nwankwo who made this declarative statement while speaking with newsmen in his office.
He maintained that APC doesn’t exist in Anambra and that the likes of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), YPP and others are dead, emphasizing that nobody is contesting against Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
# The Anambra State Police Command in its sustained fight against cultism, drug peddling and unlawful possession of firearms through the Operatives attached to the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) Enugwu Ukwu, arrested one Ebuka Ubadigbo 35 years old at Nkpor-Umuoji Road, close to a building site in Idemili North LGA.
The Operatives also recovered two pump-action guns with two live cartridges and large quantities of substances suspected to be hard drugs.
Confirming the arrest, Anambra Police Spokesperson, SP. Tochukwu Ikenga stated that preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspect confessed to involvement in drug peddling and Investigations are ongoing to identify his accomplices and trace the source of the recovered firearms.
The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. Ikenga maintained.
# Mrs Ogechukwu Emmanuel who is from Okpuno,Awka has narrated her ordeal to the office of women affairs and social welfare Anambra state. According to her, her husband Mr Ikenna Emmanuel from Amawbia, Anambra State, abandoned her and her 3 children to live with another woman who claims to be his wife.
She mentioned that the father of the woman who her husband is living with who is also a prophet told her husband that she has been killing their unborn children and so her husband stopped communicating with her, he also stopped taking care of her and her children.
She lamented that before her husband became wealthy, she was the breadwinner of the family, she sold zobo and snacks to provide money for the family upkeep, now that the husband got a job with an international company and now has money, he abandoned her and the children for another woman.
She mentioned that the woman who her husband is living with as his supposed wife is also threatening her to stay away from her husband or she will regret her life.
Anambra state ministry of women affairs and social welfare has promised her justice and protection.
The CP made the remark following the arrest of two suspects by Police Operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu over a staged kidnap incident.
The suspects identified as Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye, female, aged 23 years, and Chibuike Ogbu, male, aged 24 years, were arrested after intelligence-led operations uncovered that the supposed victim conspired with Chibuike (her boyfriend) to stage her own abduction.
The operatives also recovered the sum of ₦1,200,000 (One Million Two Hundred Thousand Naira), being part of the ransom earlier paid by the girl’s family members.
Anambra Police Spokesperson, SP. Tochukwu Ikenga in a press statement maintained that the suspects demanded ₦15,000,000 (Fifteen Million Naira) ransom, and after negotiation, three million naira (₦3,000,000) was transferred into the victim’s account.
Reacting to the development, CP. Orutugu described the incident as a reflection of the rising moral decay in the society, where young people are increasingly resorting to criminality for selfish gains.
The Police boss urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to intensify efforts in inculcating discipline, integrity, and sound values in their children and wards.
The CP also warned youths against engaging in self-destructive ventures, stressing that the long arm of the law will always catch up with criminals, no matter how cleverly disguised their schemes may be.
# The Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka has held her maiden edition of the 2025 Alumni Homecoming/Friends of the Department Award Presentation and Endowment Event.
The event held at the ASUU-NAU Secretariat with the theme, “From Campus to Boardroom: Bridging Generations, Empowering Alumni and Giving Back”, was in celebration of the achievements of the Department in keeping with her legacies as well as creating a convivial moment for her alumni.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and President Ohaneze Ndigbo FCT, Hon. Eze Primacy Okadigbo represented by the Director, UNIZIK Business School (UBS), Prof. Pius Okoye described the event as apt as alumni association is the backbone of every academia.
Declaring the event open, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi described alumni association as an assemblage of the graduates of an educational institution usually tertiary education institutions providing a platform through which graduates in different positions interact with possible professional and career promoters.
# The Mayor of Dunukofia LGA, Barr. Chijioke Ozumba has concluded his tour across communities where he felicitated with the precious women of the area during their various communities’ annual August Meetings.
While felicitating with the Ukwulu women gathered for their annual August meeting, the Mayor pleaded with them to put more effort in raising, guiding and training the children to become better in life and valuable in the society.
He condemned the recent trend in the society which is performing all sorts of evil rituals, patronising fake native doctors in a bid to make fast money, even the children who are supposed to be in Secondary School abandoned schooling and are going after quick money.
The Mayor emphasised the importance of education and handiwork to the children and in today’s society, charging the women to return to the drawing board and redirect the ways of their children.
According to him, mothers have the highest power to make their children better people in the society, instead of allowing them to become ritualists, touts, criminals and bandits roaming the street and causing nuisance in the society.
# The President-General of Building Materials International Market Ogidi and Patron of Anambra State Traders Chief Jude Nwankwo has said that nobody in Anambra state will vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 8th governorship election and that the APC can not rig the election because Anambra is APGA land.
