* The Rotary Club International has conferred the Paul Harris Fellow Award on Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Aderemi Adeoye. A delegation of the Club from District 9142 covering South East states, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, decorated the CP at the Police Commissioner’s office, state Command’s Headquarters, Amawbia, Awka South Council Area.

* The Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Right Reverend Samuel Ezeofor, has charged those entrusted with leadership positions to desist from seeing them as mere titles. Ezeofor, who called for equitable distribution of the resources, which God blessed Nigeria with, cautioned those in leadership positions against playing politics with welfare of the masses. Speaking at the Cathedral Church of Saint John Ekwulobia, during the Advent Diaconate and Priestly ordination of Aguata Diocese, Ezeofor regretted that some of those in leadership positions are performing below standards, and called on such people to have a rethink, reminding them of the need to become responsible leaders.

* The Transition Committee Chairman of Awka North Local Government Area, Comrade ThankGod Anago has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the various palliatives his administration has rolled out so far to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on Ndi Anambra.

Anago made this commendation when he supervised the distribution of rice palliative meant for the fourteen wards in Awka North Local Government Area. ANN reports that the rice palliative provided by Governor Soludo is part of his administration’s welfarist package to alleviate the sufferings of the poorest of the poor and most vulnerable in the society.

* Anambra State government has shut down the popular Coca-cola market, Okpoko and relocated the market to its new permanent site behind Power Mike, Atani road in Ogbaru Local Government Area. ANN reported that the relocation follows the plan of the state government to restore the area designated as an industrial area to its original purpose.

* Anambra-born Peace Ambassador of the United Nations and Prime Minister of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) Amb. Dr. Johnny Metchie, has called on state governments across Nigeria to ensure security and protection of traditional rulers and presidents-general in communities. Metchie who made the call during an interview with our stated that it has become very necessary that government extended protection to community leaders judging from the roles they played in fighting crimes and criminalities at the grassroots level. 

* The Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, has bestowed its Media Friendly Personality of the Year award on the Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, Dr. Joe Akabuike for the year 2023. Akabuike, a former Commissioner for Health in Anambra State, received the prestigious award at the 20th anniversary and award ceremony of NTA Channel 5 Awka.

* Christmas came early for some indigent men and women in the state as Relief market Ogbaru distributed cash and food items worth over five million Naira to them. The beneficiaries include children in orphanage homes, persons living with disabilities, and members of the market struggling financially. The distribution exercise took place during the market’s end of the year prayer presided over by Reverend Father Sampson Obuegbuna of Immaculate Parish Fegge, Onitsha.

* Governor Chukwuma Soludo has continued to receive commendations for appointment of Professor Kate Omenugha as the Acting Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. In her reaction, the Head of Department of Mass Communication of the University Prof. Angela Nwammuo described the appointment of Omenugha as a square peg in a square hole. Nwammuo who is also the Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations Anambra State described it as a reflection of the increasing belief that the Public Relations practitioners were bridge builders and better managers of human and material resources.

* Melodious tunes that uplift the spirit rented the air as choristers from different churches in Awka Anglican Diocese converged on Cathedral Church of Saint Faith Awka for the 2023 Annual Diocesan Christmas Carols and Festival of Nine Lessons. The Cathedral wore a new look of the season in light of the celebration as it was decorated with the colour of the liturgical calendar for advent.

* The Anambra State Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Barrister Anthony Ifeanya, has condemned the lukewarm attitude to work of some staff of the state workforce. Commissioner Ifeanya, who made the condemnation while addressing staff of the ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in their conference hall at the Jerome Udorji State Secretariat Complex in Awka, warned that henceforth, lateness and absenteeism will be treated with appropriate punitive measures.
