# Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo says the ministry has recorded over four thousand (4,000) cases of gender-based violence.
Speaking at the Anambra State House of Assembly complex, Obinabo outlined the ministry’s core mandate, emphasizing its central role in child, gender protection, and general welfare services across the state.
The Commissioner who appeared before the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Women Affairs to defend her ministry’s budget allocation for the year, disclosed the significant progress made by the ministry in the first quarter of 2025.
She described these outcomes as clear evidence of the ministry’s “dedicated and effective work” in protecting vulnerable groups across Anambra State.
The Commissioner assured ndi Anambra that the ministry’s commitment to protection and welfare remains unwavering. She stated that with the 2026 budget allocation, the ministry wouldl intensify efforts in Child protection and gender rights, support for widows and widowers, and, protection of abused men.
# The Anambra State House of Assembly has taken a major step toward ending roadblock extortion and eliminating illegal revenue collection, as lawmakers passed the Anambra State Taxes, Levies and Presumptive Tax Collection Bill 2025 for second reading.
The Executive bill, once enacted, is expected to end multiple taxation and stamp out unauthorized levies imposed by non-state actors across the state.
Presenting the bill, the Majority Leader, Ikenna Ofodeme, said it seeks to close revenue loopholes, curb illegal taxes, and clearly define which revenues accrue to each tier of government.
Ofodeme added that the law will help residents know exactly what they are expected to pay while promoting seamless electronic payment systems.
According to him, the bill will drastically reduce the influence of touts who extort traders and motorists under the guise of tax collection—an action that has stifled business growth and shortchanged government revenue.
# Anambra State House of Assembly has held valedictory session in honour of Late Hon. Nelson Achukwu, former lawmaker who represented Nnewi South two Constituency (2003–2007).
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, in his tribute highlighted the enduring nature of the Late Achukwu’s service.
Rt. Hon. Udeze maintained that late Achukwu was a “bridge between the aspirations of his people and the machinery of governance,” serving as a voice for the voiceless and champion of grassroots development.
Udeze stressed that “Good leadership is not measured by length of tenure but by depth of impact,” and by this measure, late Hon. Achukwu served honorably.
# The newly appointed Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra State has paid a courtesy visit to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, as part of efforts to strengthen partnerships ahead of the 2025 Ember Month safety operations set to commence on December 15.
The visit, which took place at the Commissioner’s office in Awka, focused on boosting cooperation between the FRSC and the Ministry of Health during the festive season, a period often associated with heavy travel, traffic congestion and a rise in preventable road crashes. Both agencies described the meeting as timely, coming at a moment when coordinated response systems are critical for saving lives.
Speaking during the engagement, the Sector Commander said the Ember Months usually witness increased movement across the state, making it necessary for all relevant stakeholders to work together. He noted that collaboration with the health sector would ensure faster access to medical care for road crash victims and reduce fatalities. According to him, improved emergency response, public sensitisation and strict enforcement of traffic regulations would form key components of the 2025 safety campaign.
Dr Obidike, while welcoming the delegation, commended the FRSC for its sustained commitment to road safety in Anambra. He assured the ministry’s full support in the areas of emergency preparedness, hospital readiness and community health education throughout the Ember Months.
# Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has held the ASUBEB/UBEC Official Financial Bid Opening for UBEC/SUBEB 2022, 2023, and 2024 Intervention Projects following the successful completion of the technical evaluation stage, in which bidders who scored 70% and above were shortlisted for the financial bidding exercise.
The exercise, held at the Utility Hall of ASUBEB, headquarters of the board in Awka, had in attendance ASUBEB board members, representatives of ICPC, the Ministry of Education, UBEC, Civil Society Organisations, and contractors.
In her address, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, said the financial bid opening for the 2022, 2023, and 2024 UBEC Matching Grant Projects in junior secondary and primary schools in Anambra State is the second most important process in awarding contracts and revealed that bids were received from over one thousand companies about a week ago for the technical bid opening.
She congratulated the contractors who have qualified to this point in the process, saying it means they have successfully proposed solutions and demonstrated their capabilities to do the job, but pointed out that nobody has won a contract yet and that it is only after their financial bids — which focus on the cost and financial aspects of their proposals — are evaluated that it will be determined whether they will win a contract or not.
# Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC) has vowed to intensify the fight against digital violence against women and girls in Anambra state.
The Executive Director, Mrs. Ugochi Ehiahuruike stated this during a one-day road show by SIDEC’s Women of Resilience in collaboration with State Ministry of Health in commemoration of 16 days of activism.
The walk themed, “Unite to end digital violence against all women and girls” drew women across the state, including divorces, single mothers, widows, those with disabilities and others who had experienced Gender Based Violence.
The women, carrying placards with varying inscriptions matched round the state capital and rounded up at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku.
# The determination to end corruption in Anambra State gained fresh momentum on Tuesday as the Anambra State Anti-Corruption Strategy (ANSACS) Steering Committee led a city-wide awareness walk and town hall meeting, insisting that the anti-graft war must be won to safeguard the country’s future.
The rally, held in partnership with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Civil Society and Media Accountability and Anti-Corruption Initiative (CMAAI), was part of activities marking the 2025 International Anti-Corruption Day, themed “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption — Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity.”
The event received funding support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) programme, headed in Anambra by Dr. Josephine Onah.
Speaking to participants, Dr. Onah stated that ‘Corruption is killing systems, we must defeat it’ and that RoLAC’s involvement in the campaign stems from a deep concern over the devastating impact of corruption on Nigeria’s growth.
# A delegation from Zenith Bank, Unizik Branch, Awka, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice‑Chancellor, Prof. Bond Ugochukwu Anyaehie.
Addressing the Vice‑Chancellor, Branch Head Mr. Christian Ejiofor said the visit was to congratulate Prof. Anyaehie on his recent appointment and to express the bank’s willingness to cooperate with his administration, particularly in meeting the financial needs of the university community through Zenith Bank services.
Responding, Prof. Anyaehie thanked the delegation for the timely visit and assured them of a stronger working relationship throughout his tenure.
