* Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, has announced plan to bring together groups that are committed to the fight against child trafficking and other rights abuses, so they can work together for common goal. Mrs Obinabo, who announced this when Human Rights and Road Safety Awareness Team paid her a courtesy visit in her office in Awka, said the society needs the collaboration now that more volunteers are needed to address rising cases of rights abuses.
* In a festive celebration of joy and unity, the management of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, has collaborated with the three chaplaincies within the institution to host the 2023 festival of Christmas carols and nine lessons. The event, held at the polytechnic’s convocation arena, brought together students, and staff in a harmonious display of Christmas cheer.
* The Transition Committee Chairman of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Mrs Amaka Obi has visited the site of the ongoing road maintenance at mmiri obi aja, Nnobi, which is handled by Geld Construction Company. Hon. Amaka Obi commended Professor Charles Soludo on his various road rehabilitation and construction going on in the state, especially in Idemili South.
* A bill for a law to repeal the Anambra State
newspaper and printing corporation 1994 and to provide for related matters has been passed into law. Majority leader and member representing Ekwusigo constituency Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme moved the motion for the bill to be read for the third time and was seconded by Minority leader and member representing Nnewi South Hon. Johnbosco Akaebuobi. ANN reports that the bill, at the committee of the whole was adopted by the lawmakers.
* Asphalting has commenced on the Ezira-Umuomaku-Enuguumuonyia-Achina road.
ANN reports that men of TAMAD construction company, the firm handling the project were seen laying asphalt on one side of the road from kilometer one towards Enugu-Umuonyia. Other heavy duty equipment like rollers were seen leveling the asphalt and sprinkling water on it at the same time.
* Anambra Governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo has begun charity visits to all the orphanages and welfare homes in Anambra State. The visits, according to the governor’s wife, are inspired by the need to give the children and other occupants of the homes a sense of the celebration, interact with them on areas of needs and remind them that they are always loved. ANN gathered that homes visited by the governor’s wife on the first day of the tour included Saint Martin’s Community Children/Welfare Home, Etiti, Igboukwu, Blessed-Nise Community Children’s Home, Nise, Model Community Children’s Home, Ifite-Awka, God’s Care School for Special Needs, Umuayom, Awka and Faith Community Children’s Home, Awka.
* Comrade Humphrey Nwafor has been elected the new Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), in Anambra State. The new NLC Chairman took over from Comrade Chinwe Orizu whose tenure came to an end months ago.
ANN reports that Nwafor is the current State Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) Anambra State branch.
* The Anambra State House of Assembly member representing Awka South Constituency I, Honourable Nigeria Henry Mbachu says lack of elective local government system has affected development across the 179 communities.
Mbachu who is the house committee chairman on culture, entertainment and tourism, while hosting Correspondents’ Chapel members of the Nigeria Union Journalists (NUJ) Anambra council at his residence in Awka, alleged that almost all the Transition Committee Chairmen in the 21 Local Government Areas (LGA)’s of the State, Traditional rulers, President Generals, local politicians and other top community leaders, for long now, operate from the state capital, because of lack of social amenities in their various council areas.
* Gran Hermano Academy, Awka, Anambra State marked her ten years anniversary in a grand style. The Cambridge school established in 2013, had produced best students in mathematics, computers, WAEC, NECO, JAMB, sports and others both within Anambra, South East and Nigeria generally.
* No fewer than thirty Students in both the Junior and Secondary category including their teachers from various Onitsha Archdiocesan Science Schools received different prizes and awards at the 2023 Archbishop Valerian Okeke Science Competition (AVOSCO) results. The results of the annual competition were released at the Shanahan Auditorium, Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity Onitsha, Anambra State and began with thanksgiving Mass officiated by the proprietor of (AVOSCO), His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke alongside other Archdiocesan Priests
