* The Chairman, Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, (DRC) Chuks Ezewuzie has stressed the need to give quality education to persons with disability as a way of enhancing their ability and potential to live above poverty and economic vulnerabilities.

Ezewuzie made the call in response to a question on the implementation of the state Disability Rights Law, during an advocacy visit by members of Community of Practice, (CoP) of ProjectTrust, implemented by Connected Development, CODE, with support from MacArthur Foundation in Anambra State.

The DRC Chairman, who hosted the meeting virtually, expressed satisfaction for the visit which coincided with the 2024 commemoration of the International Day for Persons with Disability (IDPD).

* The wife of the governor of Anambra State, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has sent food supply to the woman who recently survived brutal assault from her husband in Amaokpala Community, Orumba North Local Government Area.

The food supply, which was delivered today at the family’s residence by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, on behalf of the governor’s wife, is part of Mrs Soludo’s gestures to help the woman cater for herself and for her babies.

The mother of two, who is married to a man from Ajango Village, Amaokpala, was recently captured at night in a viral amateur footage lying helplessly in a pool of blood along the bush path after it was alleged that her husband had mauled her in a terrible way over a family misunderstanding.

* The Anambra State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, has assured the people of Anambra that the state government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo is fully committed to sustain the delivery of transformative projects and initiatives across critical sectors under his Ministry in the 2025 fiscal year.

The Commissioner gave the assurance at the State House of Assembly in Awka on Wednesday while addressing journalists shortly after his Ministry’s budget defense/bilateral discussion with the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, which is part of the ongoing legislative review of the state’s 2025 Appropriation Bill.

Speaking after his Ministry’s budget defense/bilateral discussion, Commissioner Chukwuemeka, who gave an overview of the Ministry’s performances and services in the year 2024, also expressed confidence in the plans, policies, and initiatives laid out for 2025 by his Ministry of Power and Water Resources, which he said is strategically positioned to drive significant improvements and sustainable/impactful development in three key areas of power supply, water provision, and fire safety services across the state.

According to a release by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer,
Anambra State Command stated that the Command frowns at the discreditable conduct of some individuals using tinted vehicles and discourages the use, except if necessary because of how criminal elements use it to beat security points and attack security operatives in the State.

* The Mayor of Ayamelum LGA Hon. Prince Alphonsus Ofumelu, has described the healthcare services of the Maranatha hospital, Umueje, as a saving grace.

Hon.Prince Alphonsus Ofumelu made this statement during his second visit to the hospital since the the kidnap incident of the doctor attached to the institution.

While interacting with staff and management of the hospital, He described the mission hospital, which has been offering free healthcare services to the good people of Ayamelum and up to fifteen states of Nigeria since eight years of its establishment, as a saving grace that has robustly reduced the infant and adult mortality rate in the local government area.

* The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer, have arrested six suspects among them a Chinese National over illegal mining activities.

Commandant Maku Olatunde, the NSCDC State Commandant stated this on Thursday while parading the suspects at the State Command Headquarters Awka.

The Commandant listed their names as Udoka Nwankwo, male (25), Amaka Samuel, female (18) , Onyi Ijeoma , female ( 45) , Chimezie Aniefuna male , (25) , Chinaza Omrba female (18) and the Chinese National Babajeje (47).

According to him, the arrest followed a tip- off on their operations at an illegal mining site at Odele Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area.

* Sir Paul Chukwuma, a frontline governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, has reiterated that the people of the state have no agreement on zoning or rotation of power for the governorship seat.

Chukwuma stated that the propaganda of zoning is being propagated by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to deceive the people and maintain their hold on power.

He stated this during a meeting with media executives in his country home, Nneyi Umueri community, Anambra East Local Government Area.

* The Nigerian Senate has passed for the second reading a bill seeking to establish the Federal College of Skills Acquisition and Technology, Agulu, Anambra State.

The sponsor of the bill, Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, said that acquiring technical and technological skills is crucial for the advancement and development of any nation.

In his lead debate, Umeh stated that establishing platforms for acquiring requisite skills through technical and technological education is a vital source of youth empowerment.

* The Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ASDRC) said it has initiated processes for legal actions against the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state for alleged discrimination and violation of rights of persons with disabilities.

The commission also hinted that it has concluded plans to seek legal redress against three citizens for their individual actions ranging from rape, attempted assault and infliction of bodily harm on persons with disabilities in the state.

The commission said the decision to launch the action followed FRSC refusal to grant driving license to one Mr Victor Onwudiegwu, a member of the deaf community in the state.
