* Anambra governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo says the ongoing free antenatal care and delivery services in the state will continue to attend to the most primary health needs of women and save low income families of serious financial burdens. The governor’s wife stated this when she visited two women who recently delivered quadruplet and triplet respectively at Referral Health Centre, Awgbu, and Enugwuabo Health Centre, Ufuma, both in Orumba North Local Government Area.
* A charitable organization, Akachukwu Akonam Foundation (AAF), has trained and empowered widows under the foundation in various skills for them to become self reliant. ANN reports that the empowerment took place at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Nnokwa during their 2023 annual widows’ day that also featured free medical services and distribution of Christmas gifts to all the widows. Speaking, the Founder of the Foundation, Engr Simon Ukpaka emphasized that the purpose of the foundation is to give the poor especially the widows a voice.Â
* Governor Chukwuma Soludo has received the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Hassan Taiwo Dada at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia. While welcoming Major General Dada and his entourage to Anambra state, Governor Soludo congratulated him on his recent appointment. The Governor appreciated the gallant officers of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces collectively, reiterating his government will not rest until law and order is fully actualized, even though their is no crime-free society.
* The Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Barrister Anthony Ifeanya, has condemned the lukewarm attitude to work of some staff of the state workforce. Commissioner Ifeanya, who made the condemnation while addressing staff of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in their conference hall at the Jerome Udoji State Secretariat, Awka, warned that henceforth, latenesses and absenteeism would be treated with appropriate punitive measures. He noted that the essence of the meeting was for stock taking, righting their wrongs and chatting a new way for year 2024.
* Anambra Commissioner for Power and water resources Engineer Julius Chukwuemeka says plans have started to revive five major water schemes next year. Engineer Chukwuemeka who appeared along-side members of his ministry during the 2024 budget defense/bilateral discussion presided by Anambra assembly committee on Finance and Appropration chaired by Hon. Ejike Okechukwu and committee on power and water resources chaired by Hon. Chimezie Ikwunne, said over seventy percent of the scheme is not working duo to lack of electricity and non-involvement of the community. According to the commissioner, “the water supply to the site we visited are mainly powered by diesel which makes it difficult and expensive. This will be solved through massive conversion of those scheme to solar.Â
* The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Anambra State Command has advised corps members to abstain from drug abuse and trafficking as they move to their host communities after orientation course. ANN reports that the Head of NDLEA, NYSC Orientation Camp, Anambra, Mr. Charles Erih, gave the charge during a one day lecture on drug abuse and trafficking for the 2023 Batch C Stream 2 corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, Anambra State.
* The Women Committee of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Anambra State Chapter has called for a complete cessation against gender-based violence against women and girls. During a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, Sir Chido Obidiegwu, the committe led by Mrs. Eucharia Uyawune, emphasized the crucial role of the media in raising awareness and tackling the trend. Mrs. Uyawune highlighted the dire situations faced by victims, underscoring the urgency of advocacy efforts.
* The new acting Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, Anambra State, Professor Kate Omenugha says her vision would be marked by increased visibility and viability of the institution.
Omenugha while speaking after a courtesy call by the youth wing of Anambra State Association of Town Unions – ASATU, led by Comrade Ken Okoli, highlighted renewal of the value system for youths, as a critical step in redirecting Anambra youths and keeping them focused on what matters. She also emphasized building a new moral code for students of the university and youths generally, vowed to hit the ground running, with her key reforms that are geared towards the university’s visibility and viability.
* Amidst concerns surrounding the current surge of diphtheria cases in multiple Nigerian states, the Anambra State Government has initiated a two-day residential training program for its Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNO).
