# Panic gripped residents of Ogechukwu Street in Awka after a thunderous explosion shattered the silence of the night, leaving behind a grim discovery.

FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (FPEDL) confirmed that a suspected vandal was electrocuted while allegedly tampering with a transformer substation in the area.

According to a statement issued by the company’s Head of Communications, Mr. Izunna Okafor, preliminary reports indicate that the blast erupted during an unlawful attempt to interfere with critical electricity infrastructure. The yet-to-be-identified individual, reportedly dressed in a security uniform, was instantly electrocuted.

By daybreak, operatives of the Anambra State Police Command had stormed the scene, evacuated the corpse, and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

 

# The Local Government Chairman of Idemili South Area, Hon. Mrs Amaka Obi alongside her team, has conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction of 1.5km of Seaman road and 1.4 km of Okenwa road at Nnobi community.

During the inspection, Hon. Obi charged the Engineer of the construction company to expedite action on the projects and ensure delivery at full capacity, emphasizing the importance of timely completion and adherence to quality standards.

The Mayor appreciated High Chief Emeka Agbanari, and High Chief Ikechukwu Azugo, for embracing Public Private Community Partnership, stating that Nnobi stakeholders are partnering with government for more infrastructure in the community.

The local government boss noted that the roads will not only enhance development and facilitate seamless access to neighbouring communities, but it will also improve the ease of doing business and contribute to reducing insecurity in the areas.

# Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is set to collaborate with the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers – Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers Association (NUPENG-LPGAR) to promote safety and prevent unethical practices in gas storage, sales, and distribution.

Commandant Maku Olatunde, the State Commandant of NSCDC Anambra State Command, made this known on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, while playing host to the Executive of NUPENG-LPGAR, led by Comrade Tochukwu Ngini

The NSCDC boss emphasized the importance of collaboration to address the growing concern of unregistered gas retailers in the state, preventing heightened fears of a potential disaster – a stark reminder of the dangers associated with poorly sited gas facilities.

While stating the purpose of the visit, Comrade Ngini expressed concern over the circulation of substandard cylinders and the hazardous presence of high-propane LPG, which poses risks to both operators and consumers.

Comrade Ngini pledged the union’s cooperation to promote safety and security in the sector. Comrade Ngini frowned at some sharp practices of unregistered gas retailers operating outside the NUPENG regulatory framework, posing risks to members of the public.

# A bill for a law to establish the Anambra State Roads Fund (ASRF) and the Anambra State Road Fund Bill (ASRFB) for the purposes of funding the management, planning, development, rehabilitation, reconstruction and maintenance of class C and D roads in Anambra State and to make provisions for connected matters, has passed through second reading.

The Majority Leader, Sir. Ikenna Ofodeme who sponsored the bill, while leading the debate at plenary on Tuesday, maintained that after creating an agency, funding is important.

Hon. Ofodeme who is the lawmaker representing Ekwusigo Constituency, noted that the board will make use of some percentage of the revenue generated by the state.

According to Ofodeme, the board will consist of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of works and Infrastructure, Anambra State Town Union Council, Nigeria Society of Engineers amongst others.

# The State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command, Commandant Maku Olatunde, has advocated for more support from Nigerians towards stronger environmental risk management as the Corps joins the global community to commemorate the 2026 World Civil Defence Day (WCDD).

Commandant Maku made this call at the State Command Headquarters in Awka while assessing the level of preparedness of the Command as the world prepares to commemorate World Civil Defence Day on March 1, 2026, with the theme “Managing Environmental Risks for a Resilient and Sustainable Future”.

According to him, the NSCDC recognizes the importance of collective action in managing environmental challenges for a resilient and sustainable future for all.

Maku Olatunde stated that the Command will partner with relevant stakeholders to reduce environmental hazards and promote sustainable practices, aligning with global efforts to address climate change, conserve biodiversity, manage waste, ensure water security, and build disaster preparedness.

# Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, at the 242nd meeting of the Senate held on the Wednesday, 25th February, 2026 at the Zephaniah Madubuko Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences, elected Professor Alex Chinwuba Asigbo, of the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)

At the meeting, Professor Hilda Ewosiida Osisioma, of the Department of Business Administration, was elected Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration)

Hitherto, Prof. Osisioma was the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (coordinating) for a period of three months.

Prof. Alex Asigbo is the current Director of UNIZIK Commercial Ventures and former Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

# President General, Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders’ Association (ASMATA), has sympathizes with traders after Fire destroys goods worth ₦300m at Mgbuka Obosi mechanic village

A mysterious early morning fire over the weekend razed the Mgbuka Obosi Mechanic Village in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, destroying goods estimated at about ₦300 million.

The inferno, which reportedly started around 2 a.m, caused extensive damage to property, including two vehicles, numerous Lister generating sets, about 300 wheelbarrows, and several car engines.

Sympathizing with the affected traders, the President-General of the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders’ Association (ASMATA), Chief Humphrey Anuna, urged the victims to remain hopeful, assuring them that efforts would be made to seek assistance for them. He noted that many of those affected are small-scale traders struggling to make a living.

Anuna suggested that the fire may have been caused by illegal electrical connections within the market and cautioned traders against such practices to prevent future occurrences. He added that he would report the incident to the state government to explore possible ways of supporting the victims in rebuilding their businesses.

# The Chieftain of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Ikenna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Ike Cubana has formally declared his intention to contest for Idemili North/South Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives

Speaking during his declaration, Chief Iyiegbu said that his decision to run was borne out of a genuine desire to offer purposeful and people-centred representation at the national level.

Among his key agenda, is a commitment to unlocking and maximizing the vast agricultural potential of idemili North and South, creating value chains that will empower farmers, generate employment, and attract private investment to the constituency.

Ike Cubana also emphasized plans to prioritize digital skills training for youths, as a means of preparing them for opportunities in the modern economy and reducing unemployment.

He further assured stakeholders, party executives and constituents that his ambition is driven by service, development and unity, stating that effective representation must translate to visible impact in people’s lives.
