# The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old woman, Mrs. Edeh Osinachi, over the alleged physical abuse of a 17-year-old girl in Awka, the capital city of the state.

The arrest, followed the timely intervention of school authorities and the Anambra State Ministry of Education.

Confirming this in a statement, Anambra Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that the suspect was formally handed over to the Police by officials of the Ministry of Education as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard the welfare and security of students and pupils across the state.

According to Ikenga, preliminary investigations revealed that officials of the victim’s school noticed visible injuries on her body during a teaching session and immediately expressed concerns and began asking her questions.

Upon further inquiry by the school authorities, the girl reportedly disclosed that the injuries were inflicted by her guardian, who she serves as house girl, because she used her phone without permission.

# Local Government Chairmen in Anambra State have been charged to embrace accountability, transparency and effective governance as the foundation for improved service delivery and sustainable development at the grassroots.

This formed the thrust of deliberations at a one-day capacity building meeting organised for local government chairmen in the state under the Strengthening Transparency, Accountability and Governance Process (STAGE-2) project, by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, in partnership with the International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), with support from the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room.

Held in Awka, the well-attended event brought together elected local government chairmen, senior government officials, labour leaders, civil society actors and development partners to reflect on the state of local government administration in Anambra and chart pathways for institutional strengthening. Themed “Strengthening Local Government Systems for Effective Administration, Accountability and Service Delivery in Anambra State,” the engagement focused on deepening democratic governance at the third tier of government and translating electoral gains into tangible dividends for citizens.

# Anambra State House of Assembly at
plenary on Thursday, commends Governor Chukwuma Soludo on the reclaimation, rechannelization, and remediation of the erosion menace at Umugama Ire Village, Abba, in Njikoka, local government area.

The commendation came through a motion sponsored by the Deputy Majority Leader Dr. Jude Akpua.

Hon. Akpua who is the lawmaker representing Njikoka two constituency, noted that Umugama Ire Village Abba has historically suffered devastating gully erosion, resulting to loss of lives, land loss, threats to homes and farmlands, disruption of movement, economic hardship, and risks to human lives.

The lawmaker maintained that under Soludo administration, the ongoing and advanced comprehensive erosion control measures, including robust double drainage systems, rechannelization of water flows, reclaimation of affected areas, and remediation works are all aimed at preventing recurrence as well as ensure durability for resilience and sustainability.

# Anambra Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor has charged information officers to embrace continuous self-development, describing professional growth as a journey that requires discipline and persistence.

Dr. Mefor, in his opening remarks during a training, designed to accommodate Information Officers in the State, held at the Situation Room of the Ministry,
emphasized the importance of quality writing.

The Commissioner noted that poorly written reports undermine professionalism and create unnecessary workload for editors. He stressed that the training was designed for the personal and professional growth of information officers.

Sharing his personal experience, Dr. Mefor said that his appointment by the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo was influenced by his consistent social media visibility and quality writing, despite not having a prior personal relationship with the Governor.

He encouraged information officers to go beyond routine reports and embrace video formats such as vox pops and other visual storytelling tools that make them both seen and heard.

# Ahead of the 2027 general elections and other subsequent polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on eligible residents of Anambra State to actively participate in the ongoing second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, while also cautioning against double or multiple registrations, to avoid total disenfranchisement.

The Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Agwu, made the call on Wednesday while addressing journalists at the Commission’s headquarters in Awka, stressing that the CVR exercise, which commenced on January 5, 2026, will
officially end on April 17, 2026, with no guarantee of extension.

According to the REC, the current CVR exercise is specifically targeted at preparing a credible and inclusive voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly for citizens who attained voting age after the July 2025 registration exercise that was conducted in the state prior to last year’s
governorship election.

This ongoing second phase of the CVR, she noted, will also accommodate those who could not register earlier, as well as voters seeking corrections, transfers, or replacement of damaged or lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

# The President of the International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), Prince Chris Azor, said the one-day capacity building meeting organised for local government chairmen in the state, was born out of concern over the prolonged absence of democratic governance at the local government level despite the existence of democracy at the federal and state tiers.

Azor recalled that for over a decade, grassroots governance structures were largely inactive, prompting civil society organisations to mobilise partnerships aimed at restoring elected local government administration in the state.

# The Executive Committee of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) has unanimously passed a vote of confidence on its Chairman, Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, while approving February 6, 2026, for the association’s Annual General Assembly (AGA).

The resolutions were reached during the first full board meeting of the Executive Committee held at the ANSFA Secretariat.

The meeting followed the board’s by-election conducted on January 15, 2026, at the East End Hotel, Awka.

During the meeting, the board congratulated the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, for incorporating football into the recent Onwa Dezemba yuletide celebrations, describing the initiative as a boost to sports development and grassroots football in the state.

# Traders in Onitsha Main Market have begged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to temper justice with mercy and reconsider his stand on the planned demolition of ten thousand shops at the popular Onitsha Main Market, and largest Market in West Africa.

The traders while pleading, stated that demolition of the structures, as proposed by Soludo, will throw millions of families into frustration and untimely deaths.

In an interview with Journalists at the Onitsha Main Market, some affected traders in the Market begged Soludo to reconsider the steps taken so far, saying that any move to implement what he said would lead millions of traders to their earlier graves.

One of the traders whose shop is located at Bright Street of the Market, Ndubuisi Nzewi, said that he will commit sucide if the Governor go ahead to demolish his shop.
