* Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Anambra Chapter has commended the State Government for timely intervention in the case of Tania Okpala, a former national youth Tennis champion. SWAN Anambra Chapter in a Statement signed by Chimezie Anaso and Ikenna Nwokedi, Chairman and Secretary respectively, thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife Nonye for their interest and intervention towards rehabilitation of Tanya.

* The Director General of Non Indigenes in Anambra State under the aegis of Soludo Ambassadors, Hon. Nwachinemere Kingsley Nnanna has lauded Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo for the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of roads in the state. Hon. Nwachinemere applauded Governor Charles Soludo for entrenching good governance through the execution of pro-people projects in various communities across the state. He stated that infrastructural development is the key to the growth of a developing country, adding that Governor Soludo has contributed immensely to the growth and development of communities in the state.

* The Cubana family has flagged off 1km of road at Umuagu village in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State. The 1km road network by Cubana group is expected to be completed in March and will be commissioned. 

Speaking after the flag-off, APGA Chieftain, Hon. Ikenna Iyiegbu said that the Cubana family is giving back to society and had keyed in to Governor Charles Soludo’s sustainable, livable and prosperous homeland. 

* Members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Anambra North Chapter have paid a charity visit to inmates of Onitsha Correctional Centre. Angel Network News reports that the visit sponsored by the patron of the group and President General of Umueri Progressive Union, Chief John Metchie, was aimed at reminding youths of their roles in the nation’s building, including those at the Correctional Centre and to give them hope of a new beginning if they adhere to the reformation they receive at the centre. Chief Metchie who was represented by Comrade Joshua Winner, regretted how some youths engage in different forms of crime that jeopardizes their future, and called on those at the Correctional center to be mindful of the act that brought them to the centre and use the opportunity of their staying to have a rethink about their life, reconcile with God and become better persons when they come out.

* Member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu is fulfilling her campaign promises by empowering the youths of her constituency, including people living with disabilities, with technological skills. The aim is to enable them to compete positively at the global stage and participate meaningfully and equitably in decision-making processes. The digital training program, which will select 200 youths from Awka North and South Federal Constituency, is designed to focus on three digital skills: digital marketing, mobile graphics, and web development (specifically WordPress). The participants will gain a well-rounded understanding of various aspects of the digital industry which will allow them establish their own employment in the creative Industry.

Anambra Assembly Calls For Construction Of 

Mini Market Within Awka, To Control Menace Of Street Trading

The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Special Adviser on Trade and Market and the Managing Director, Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, (ACTDA), to commence the construction of affordable local mini markets within Awka metropolis to control the menace of street trading and associated effects on the state capital.

Sponsor of the motion Hon. Nigeria Henry  Mbachu, the member representing Awka South one constituency while making his submission said the rising rate of poverty in Nigeria is very alarming thereby plugging millions of people into extreme poverty. 

“Residence of Awka metropolis who could not afford renting of lock up shops, resort to road side trading to make ends meet thereby distorting the extatis of the capital city which resulted to the move by the relevant authority to apply measures to stop the menace of street trading while the outcome was unpleasant. 

“People patronize these shanties because the existing markets are far from residential areas, while people also looks for ways to reduce cost of living and cost of transportation. 

“There are many quarters within Awka metropolis which creates the need to establish local mini-markets to serve the people living within those areas. 

“It is nearly impossible to secure a shop within the already established markets and the limited shops available are in high and exorbitant price to rent. 

“The creation of mini-markets within Awka metropolis, will be a solution to solve the menace of shanties, street trading and serve as a means of encouraging micro businesses thereby achieving the goals of making Anambra a livable and prosperous homeland.

” Awka has one major market in Eke-Awka and its capacity cannot serve the population of people living in the city which resulted to the creation of street treading as an option in other neugbourhood. 

” A woman selling tomatoes and maggi cannot aford to rent a shop which is not less than 150,000 naira now in Awka and this has made street trading difficult to curb. 

Speaking in support of the motion, Minority Whip Hon. Paul Obu (Orumba North), Chief Whip Hon. Jude Ngobili (Ihiala one), Hon. Patrick Okafor (Onitsha North two), Hon. Golden Iloh (Ihiala two), Hon. Anthony Mobuike (Aguata two), Hon. Bernard Udemezue (Ayamelum) and Hon. Emmanuel Nwafor (Orumba South) in their separate submissions called for the construction of affordable local mini market within Awka metropolis.

” Street trading is a very big menace in the state. 

and is not decent. Creation of this mini markets will reduce avoidable accident and creat easy flow of vehicle. An alternative provision should be made” The lawmakers stated 

Anambra Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze commended Hon. Nigeria Mbachu for the motion, stating that their is no better society were government will encourage street trading. 

“The construction of mini markets in Awka should not be left for government alone. Individuals and cooperate establishements should also assist so that we will have enough”. Udeze said

The house adjourned to Thursday February 8th 2024.
