# Anambra State has officially commenced the transformation of the old Government House into the permanent site for the Solution Innovation District (SID).

Spanning 12 to 13 hectares, the massive tech hub is being designed to rival the infrastructure and output of Silicon Valley, a significant shift in the state’s urban landscape.

According to Governor Chukwuma Soludo who embarked on on the-spot inspection, the ambitious project aligns with the administration’s core philosophy of “Everything Technology, Technology Everywhere.”

The Governor stated that by centralizing innovation within a dedicated physical space, the government aims to integrate digital solutions into every facet of the local economy and governance, stating that construction is currently in its first phase, with a high-intensity work schedule aimed at finishing initial structures within the next few week, as assured by the contractors.

Governor Soludo has scheduled a follow-up visit for the end of the month to monitor milestones, adding that this hands-on approach ensures that the project remains on track to meet its goal of providing a permanent home for the state’s growing population of developers, engineers, and entrepreneurs.

 

# Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has held its 2026 Onboarding Session for Heads of Departments and Directors as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen academic leadership and align Departmental Administration with the University’s Vision for sustainable growth and global relevance.

The session, which brought together Heads of Departments and Directors from across the University, focused on redefining the responsibilities of departmental leadership within the context of the University’s commitment to Values, Viability, and Visibility—the 3Vs guiding the current administration.

In her opening address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, outlined what she described as the strategic direction of the University, emphasizing that Heads of Departments occupied a critical position in translating institutional vision into practical academic outcomes.

She noted that departments remained the core units through which teaching quality, research productivity, administrative efficiency, and student experience were measured, stressing that effective leadership at that level was central to building the Now University and of the Future.

 

# A university don in the Faculty of Medicine, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Anambra State, Prof Stanley Anyanwu, has called on women, especially in Africa, to present themselves early enough for breast cancer examination, as a surest way to avert risks and survive.

Anyanwu, who is a Professor of Surgery (Surgical Oncology), made the call in a paper presentation during the Second Jubilee Academic Lecture (JAL) of NAU, under the Chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Stanley Bond Anyaehe.

JAL is an academic lecture presented by academics who have been professors for over 25 years and are still in active service

Delivering a paper on the theme: ”Silver Reflections, Golden Horizons: One Surgeon’s Lifesaving Legacy in Pioneering Breast Cancer Research and Care in Nigeria”, Anyanwu stressed: ‘If you present yourself early, we will treat you because it reduces the risk, but if you present late, there is nothing we can do about it.

# The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State Chapter, Ministry of Information Anambra state, and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) have paid their last respect to one of their members, the late Mrs. Ngozi Iwunze, who was laid to rest at Okija, Ihiala LGA.

The Chairman of the Anambra State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu in his condolence speech described the death of Mrs. Iwunza as an irreparable loss to the NUJ, her family, the Church, and to the society at large coupled with the fact that she died at an untimely age of 53.

Comrade Uche Kalu, who spoke unbehalf of NAWOJ Anambra State Chapter, said that Late Mrs. Ngozi Iwunze was always present and participated in the associations activities, stating that she will be missed for her doggedness.

Dr. Stanley Onunkwor, the Information Chapel Chairman of NUJ and Hon. Kennedy Anaedozie, the Chairman of Welfare Association of the Ministry of Information, Anambra State described Late Mrs. Iwunze as a vibrant lady, a very good journalistic reporter whose death is a big blow to the Ministry.

 

# Riverine sand miners and tipper drivers operating within Onitsha metropolis has staged a protest against alleged harassment and multiple taxation by Anambra State government officials, despite possessing valid licences and clearances from federal authorities.

The protesters converged at the Onitsha Area Office of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), accusing operatives of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) and officials from Ogbaru, Oyi, Onitsha North and Onitsha South local government areas of daily extortion.

Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Allow tipper drivers and sand miners to live,” “Our activities are legal,” and “Enough of over-taxation and intimidation,” the protesters insisted that sand mining activities fall exclusively under federal jurisdiction.

Speaking during the protest, the President General of the Riverine Sand Miners Association of Nigeria, Sir Chris Mbaegbu, displayed licences and permits issued by federal regulatory agencies, including NIWA, authorising their operations.

# The Anambra State Coordinator of Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Chief Okey Ezenwa, has reminded the local government area Coordinators of the Targets of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Nigeria.

Chief Ezenwa who gave the reminder, in Awka, while inaugurating and presenting appointment letters to the LGA Coordinators, commended what he described as the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in repositioning the country for the betterment of the citizens and for greater development of the country.

He also commended the role of the Director General and National Coordinator of Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Governor Hope Uzodimma, noting that the re-election of President Tinubu would consolidate the gains of the past three years.

Ezenwa noted that the group had commenced ward-to-ward mobilisation ahead of Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027.

# Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, has explained the reason behind the decision of the Onitsha Traditional Council to reduce traditional burial ceremonies from three days to one day.

Speaking during an interview in Onitsha, the Monarch said the move was aimed at reducing the heavy financial burden placed on bereaved families.

According to him, traditional burial practices in Onitsha previously involved a wake-keep that lasted all night, followed by burial ceremonies and thanksgiving services spread over three days an arrangement that often required significant spending.

He acknowledged that the decision initially faced resistance, particularly from women’s groups, due to the long standing nature of the traditions. However, he said a consultation committee was set up to engage stakeholders and explain that the cultural rites would not be lost.

# Anambra Gubernatorial Candidate of African Democratic Congress, ADC, Mr John Nwosu, has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s Public Health sector, especially in the area of Emergency Response.

Nwosu’s call followed the reported death of a young entrepreneur, Miss Ifunanya Nwangene, from a snakebite in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

Nwosu who described the death of the young woman as preventable, expressed deep sorrow over what he described as her untimely death, noting that her passing represented a painful loss of a life filled with promise and potential.
