# Anambra State Government has evacuate a refuse dumpsite which had lasted for almost twelve years at Owelle-Aja, Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area
The local government chairman of Idemili North LGA, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka while
speaking to newsmen on the evacuation exercise and indiscriminate dumping of refuse by residents, frowned at people’s lack of consciousness to keep their environment clean
The Mayor maintained that Owelle-Aja has six massive dumpsites which he had planned to evacuate before now but there was no access road into the community, coupled with electrification done with small wooden poles that the wires would be touching the tippers.
The local government boss disclosed that he worked with the landlords to create an access road which enabled the exercise, and said he is determined to evacuate all the refuse and will dialogue with landlords and tenants on an effective refuse disposal pattern for the community.
Hon. Nkwoka noted that Idemili North Council Area has a huge population which puts pressure on infrastructure, urging residents to bag their refuse and keep it in front of their houses for waste contractors who go around to collect it,
He warned that violators caught dumping waste indiscriminately will be made to hire two tippers that will go round and collect wastes, or be sent to jail if the person fails to provide the tippers.
# The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced digital birth and death registration under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system in Anambra State.
The Federal Commissioner representing Anambra State in the NPC, Mr Chidi Ezeoke, announced this during a press briefing in Awka.
Ezeoke stated that the VitalReg platform became fully operational across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory on July 1, 2026.
Commissioner Ezeoke said the Commission has established 4,011 functional registration centres across the country, with 131 of the centres domiciled in Anambra State and plans underway to increase the number to improve access to registration services.
He described the initiative as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen civil registration and improve the generation of reliable demographic data, and explained that the digital platform is designed to modernize birth and death registration by providing faster and more efficient services, 24-hour online access, digital certificate issuance where applicable, improved data accuracy through automated validation, and a secure national database.
Ezeoke noted that the initiative builds on the E-CRVS system launched by President Bola Tinubu in November 2023 and aligns with the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda. He lamented that although Nigeria records about five million births annually, birth registration coverage stands at only about 57 per cent, while death registration remains below 20 per cent.
# The Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev Samuel Ezeofor has decried the high rate of idolatry among the youths despite increase in the number of churches in the society.
The bishop stated this while declaring open the maiden Aguata Diocesan lecture series’ with the theme Culture, Tradition and the Gospel at the cathedral church of Saint John Ekwulobia.
Ezeofor blamed parents and ministers of God for the high rate of idolatry among the youths, calling on priests to rise to the occasion.
Describing culture as people’s identity, the Bishop who doubles as National Chairman, Evengelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion (EFAC) cautioned against misconception between culture, tradition and gospel in order not to bring threat to the society.
He called on Christians to always see themselves as living gospel by engaging in those acts capable of winning souls for Christ.
# The Government of Anambra State hereby informs the general public, that individuals and communities are no longer permitted to construct speed bumps on public roads without prior approval.
The state government maintained that
all speed bumps and their locations must be approved by the State Government.
According to Dr. Law Mefor, the
Commissioner for Information and
Value Reformation, Anambra State, a uniform design for speed bumps will now have to be sought from the State’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
Speed bumps will be restricted to critical areas such as markets, churches, schools, and other locations as determined by the government. It will be an offence to construct speed bumps without authorisation or outside approved locations”. Mefor stated.
# The Anambra State Government has inaugurated an eight-member Review Committee to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the Anambra State Transport Company, TRACAS, as part of ongoing efforts to reposition the state-owned transport service for greater efficiency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
Inaugurating the committee on, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Ibuzo, said the exercise is aimed at evaluating TRACAS’ operational performance and identifying practical reforms to strengthen the organisation.
The Commissioner explained that the review became necessary following concerns that TRACAS’ revenue generation and overall performance have not reflected the state’s remarkable economic growth and expanding transportation demands under the Soludo administration.
He charged the committee, chaired by Chief Michael Chukwudeme, to examine operational, financial, and administrative issues affecting TRACAS, review revenue performance, and recommend practical measures to improve efficiency, transparency, service delivery, and institutional accountability.
Hon. Ibuzo directed the committee to submit weekly progress reports throughout the assignment to keep Governor Chukwuma Soludo fully briefed and to facilitate timely government decisions on the implementation of recommendations.
# The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Anambra State, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has joined the world in celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, describing African women and girls as the backbone of families, communities, and nations.
In a statement issued to mark the occasion, the Commissioner commended the strength, resilience, and brilliance that African women and girls continue to display across every sphere of life, from the home to the boardroom, noting that their contributions remain central to the growth and stability of society.
Mrs. Onyekesi reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry, under the administration of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR, to promoting equality, empowerment, and opportunities that enable every woman and girl to thrive. She stated that the Ministry would continue to champion policies and programmes that protect the rights of women and girls, while creating platforms for their advancement in education, leadership, and economic empowerment.
The Commissioner used the occasion to call on stakeholders, families, and communities to join hands in nurturing the potential of African women and girls, stressing that a society that empowers its women and girls builds a stronger and more prosperous future for all.
# The Youth Movement For Good Governance, Nnewi North Chapter, has pledged its readiness to support Nzukọ Ọra Nnewi Town Union and the Local Government Council in areas where its services are required.
The delegation, led by the Nnewi North Coordinator, Comrade Anthony Okafor, made the pledge during a courtesy visit to the President General of Nzukọ Ọra Nnewi Town Union, Hon. Prince Jude Osumuoh.
Comrade Okafor said the visit was to familiarise the group with the leadership of the Town Union and to express their commitment to partnering with community stakeholders for the progress of Nnewi North.
In his response, Hon. Osumuoh urged the youths to reject actions capable of causing division and violence in the area, stressing that their future and well-being are more valuable than any political agenda.
He also appealed to them not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of violence by individuals pursuing selfish interests.
The President General reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with youth groups that promote unity, peace and development in Nnewi.
# In line with its mission statement that promotes access to quality healthcare as a fundamental human right, a non-governmental organization, JDM Global Foundation, has organized a health and wellness fair in Utuh, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Over 200 people, including men and women, young and old, were beneficiaries of the two-day event that featured free health checks, medications, screening, counseling, health education, wellness tips, and more.
President of JDM Global Foundation, Lolo Jennifer Madubuko, in an opening remark delivered by the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, JDM Global Foundation, Venerable Okey Ifionu, noted that as a young daughter from Utuh growing up, she experienced mothers who were unable to afford medical treatment, fathers who silently endured pain because they could not pay hospital bills, as well as elderly men and women who suffered from illnesses that could have been prevented or treated if healthcare had been accessible.
While encouraging everyone to take advantage of such services because health is priceless, Lolo Madubuko promised that the health and wellness fair won’t be a one-off programme, but the beginning of a long-term commitment to the mission of restoring hope, improving lives, and giving back to society, and the vision of building a healthier community where people no longer wait until they are seriously ill before seeking medical attention.
# The Anambra State Ministry of Environment have begun discussions on a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability, waste management, climate resilience and the circular economy across the state.
The discussions commenced when a TechnoServe delegation, led by its Programme Director, Mr. Shadrack Guusu, paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, to congratulate him on his appointment, present the organisation’s programmes and explore areas of collaboration with the Ministry.
Speaking during the meeting, TechnoServe’s Project Manager, Mr. Daniel Oderinde, said the organisation is well positioned to support the Ministry’s proposed Environmental Academy through technical expertise, capacity building and environmental education.
He added that TechnoServe is prepared to provide technical blueprints, strengthen collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders, as well as facilitate market linkages for recyclable plastics to boost waste recovery and promote a thriving circular economy.
The organisation’s Business Adviser, Mr. Franklin Nwaribe, noted that TechnoServe has maintained a successful presence in Anambra State over the years and remains committed to aligning its interventions with the Ministry’s environmental priorities.
Responding, Dr. Aguiyi welcomed the proposed collaboration, stressing that partnerships should deliver measurable results and align with the state’s development priorities. He reiterated the importance of institutionalising environmental education through the proposed Environmental Academy and called for support in curriculum development, technical training, provision of protective equipment and establishment of waste sorting facilities, particularly in schools, to nurture environmentally responsible citizens.
The commissioner urged TechnoServe and its partners, including the Coca-Cola Foundation, to expand interventions aimed at addressing flooding, gully erosion and plastic pollution.
# Graduation may mark the end of academic studies, but true success depends on the knowledge, skills and mindset cultivated beyond the classroom. This was the central message at the Catalyst 2026 Summit held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Organised by the University’s Student Initiatives and Empowerment Office, the summit focused on the role of financial literacy, self-esteem and psychological well-being in preparing undergraduate students for life after graduation.
Delivering the keynote address, the Director of the Centre for Counselling and Career Development, Prof. Harry Obi-Nwosu, underscored the strong relationship between financial literacy, academic excellence and mental well-being. He urged students to cultivate sound financial habits and responsible money management from an early stage.
Representing the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, Mr. Daniel Okoye shared his personal journey from working as an agent to achieving career growth, encouraging students to build capacity, remain focused and embrace continuous self-development.
