# Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Anambra State Chapter has expressed concern over below par performance of Team Anambra at the just concluded 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Anambra SWAN in a communique issued at the end of its monthly congress held on June 5th 2025 in Awka, after a holistic review of Team Anambra’s participation at the just concluded 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival where it won two gold, six silver and 10 bronze, the congress resolved as follows:
SWAN during the congress presided by the Chairman Mr. Chimezie Anaso, called on the state government to pay greater attention to the funding, training and welfare of athletes to check the exodus of most of Anambra’s best athletes to other states.
SWAN called on the Anambra State Sports Development Commission to review its programmes and policies as the strategy has not yielded the desired result.
# Governor Chukwuma Soludo has congratulated the Muslim community in Anambra State and across Nigeria on the celebration of this year’s Eid Kabir (Eid al-Adha).
In his goodwill message through a press release signed by Mr. Christian Aburime,
Press Secretary to the Governor, Soludo recognises the profound significance of this holy festival for Muslims, which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s devout faith and obedience to Allah’s command.
The Governor said the celebration reminds us of the virtues of sacrifice, devotion, and submission to divine will that transcend religious boundaries and speak to our common humanity.
Soludo also acknowledges the valuable contributions of our Muslim brothers and sisters to the socio-economic development of Anambra State, noting that the peaceful co-existence of people of different faiths in our state remains a source of pride and a tribute to our shared values of tolerance, respect, and unity.
The Governor called upon all Nigerians to reflect on the lessons of Eid Kabir, particularly the importance of selflessness, compassion for the less privileged, and devotion to the common good, values that align perfectly with our administration’s commitment to building a prosperous, inclusive, and harmonious society.
# The Anambra State Police Command Spokesperson, SP. Tochukwu Ikenga has been honoured by the Police High Command at an awards ceremony in Abuja.
Speaking, the Public Relations Police Officer (PPRO) Anambra State Command, acknowledged that the award is not a trophy because it was never a lone effort but a collaborative effort in a renewed vision and deeper resolve to mark a new beginning of their journey towards excellence.
SP. Ikenga expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, the AIG Zone 13, the Commissioner of Police Anambra State and to everyone who believes in the force.
According to Ikenga, the award does not make him extraordinary.
# The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Command, has intensified its enforcement efforts to ensure compliance with road safety regulations.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander said the initiative aims to reduce road traffic crashes through a crackdown on fake or non-existent number plates, speed limit devices, and vehicle overloading throughout the state.
“The enforcement of number plate regulations is crucial for security reasons. Each vehicle registration detail is linked to personal information about the owner, including their phone number, address, and name. Alexander said
# A male student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has d!ed after jumping from his off-campus lodge.
The boy jumped from the balcony of the three-story building located near the school after allegedly consuming “colos”.
According to eyewitnesses, they heard a loud thud on Thursday evening, June 5, and rushed to the scene, where they found the male student in a p00l of his bl**d.
He was rushed to a hospital but was confirmed de@d.
# Human Rights Lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor Esq has dragged National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration, (NAFDAC) to court over Ogbo-Ogwu bridge head market alleged violations.
Ejiofor with particular reference to Ms. Sophie Eberechukwu Okoye, a young trader devastated after her boutique shop was unlawfully broken into and allegedly looted .
According to a press release dated June 6, 2025, signed by Ejiofor and made available to newsmen stated that the act is unacceptable.
# Police-led Joint Security Operatives comprising the Department of State Service, Army, Navy, Civil Defence and Anambra State Vigilante members in the early hours of Thursday razed down an identified criminal Camp and neutralized one of the armed hoodlums at Agulu-ezechukwu, Aguata local government area.
The Operatives also recovered one Ash Toyota Sienna with Reg No: EKY 03 FF, one unregistered white Mazda Hilux, one Motorcycle, some household/kitchen items which include: pots, gallons, groceries, some sleeping mattresses, Manchincal tools, clothes and other incriminating items.
According to a press statement by SP. Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, the Joint Security Force in a well-coordinated operation overran the criminal Camp after a seven-hour gun duel with the armed hoodlums.
“The Operatives are still combing the area for possible arrest of other fleeing suspects because of a lot of fresh blood stains in the area’. Ikenga stated.
# The Anambra State Association of Women and Cancer Coalition in Nigeria have paid treatment bills worth four million naira for four cancer survivors drawn from three communities.
The cheque boards of one million naira were presented to each of the beneficiaries while the actual sums will be paid into the hospitals where they are receiving treatment.
The beneficiaries are: Mary Nwosa from Umuoji in Idemli North Local Government Area and Tochukwu Chukwuka from Utuh Nnewi South LGA, Ukamaka Okoli and Chigozie Nwankwo both from Ufuma in Orumba North LGA.
At the presentation witnessed by the Managing Director Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, Mr Chris Molokwu, the Founder of ASA Women, USA, Dr Uche Umeh, recalled that the gesture is in furtherance of her organization’s humanitarian intervention aimed at ensuring the well-being of fellow citizens especially women.
# Anambra Commissioner for Lands Professor Offornze Amucheazi has called on the youths of the state to help maintain peace and unity in their communities to attract investors into the state, boost the revenue and create jobs for the youths.
Amucheazi gave the advice during the training workshop organized by the Anambra State Association of Town Union Youth Wing , held at former Government House Awka
Professor Amucheazi who frowned at the way some prospective investors are moving out of the state with the attendant loss of potential jobs and revenue due to youths restiveness however advised the youths to be more skillful and dedicated to duty given them to win the confidence of their employers.
