* Journalists were barred from entering the Grand Seasons Hotel in Nnewi, Anambra State where the Labour Party hold it’s National Convention. There is heavy security presence at the hotel, and this is not unconnected with the crisis in the party. Series of calls and text messages sent to the spokesman of the party, Obiorah Ifoh, urging avail journalists with tags that can facilitate their entry into the venue was rebuffed.
* A bill for a law to provide for the establishment of Anambra State Commuters’ Manifest Scheme 2024 and for other related matters has scaled second reading at the floor of the Anambra State House of Assembly. The Sponsor of the bill Hon Jude Chimezie Ngobili who is the member representing Ihiala one Constituency, while leading the debate said the bill is seeking to have a database of all inflow and outflow of passengers in the state. Hon. Ngobili who is the Chief Whip of the 8th assembly revealed that the objective of the bill is to provide for the safety and welfare of passengers in Anambra State so that in event of any road accident, there will be an agency that will take care of the victims.
* The Anambra State Commissioner for Education Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh says, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has provided education without difficulties for the people of the State. Speaking on the impact of Governor Soludo’s policies in Education, Professor Chuma-Udeh disclosed that the administration of Governor Soludo’s employment of five thousand teachers reduced the rate of out of school children from thirty-two-point four percent, in 2021-to-fifteen-point two percent in 2022 and that the rate was further dropped in 2023-to-two-point nine percent with the declaration of free education in Anambra State. Commissioner Chuma-Udeh stated that while the employment of teachers brought to an end the era of schools without teachers, the free education declaration made Anambra State a destination for acquisition of education without hassles in the South-East.
* A bill for a law to prohibite secret cultism and Similar activities and to provide for related matters have been read for the first time at the Anambra State House of Assembly. The bill is sponsored by the Majority Leader and member representing Ekwusigo constituency Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme.
* A political group, under the aegis of Equity Movement,Turn By Turn has thrown its weight behind Chief Barth Nwibe, a businessman and oil magnate as the governor of Anambra come 2025. Rev. Emmanuel Emenike, Coordinator of Equity Movement,Turn By Turn in Anambra who disclosed this in Awka said Anambra Government House was yearning for change. Emenike said Anambra needed someone who shared the common vision of all well meaning people of the state and Nigerians in general.
* A bill for a law to establish the Anambra State Public Complaints, Financial Crimes and Anti-Corruption Commission and for related purposes has scaled through Second Reading at the Anambra State House of Assembly. Sponsor of the bill Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme the member representing Ekwusigo Constituency while leading the debate stated that the only means and easier way to address the complains within Anambra State is through this commission. According to Hon. Ofodeme who is the Majority leader, “This bill if passed into law will make it easy for ndi Anambra to channel their reports and complans instead of going to Abuja.Â
* A non-denominational organisation, Ruth Sisters’ Fellowship International (RSFI), Nigeria, has called for the empowerment of Nigerian women to stand against all life’s challenges including widowhood. The Rector, Prof. Ada Menakaya made the call at its 2nd Anniversary and Chapter Inauguration with the Theme: “Ruth-Naomi Widow’s Mara Ripple (Ruth 1:19-21) in Onitsha, Anambra State.
Menakaya, represented by National Coordinator, Nigeria, Evangelist Caroline Enarere, however, encouraged widows, particularly the young ones to empower themselves educationally for productive ventures to better their lives, instead of making themselves vulnerable in society.
* Honourable Wilfred Ikechukwu Ezike popular known as Mgbiligba Anambra, says it will take the grace of God for him to walk again with his two legs due to the barbaric treatment he suffered in the hands of the anti-tout boys who made a video of him while they hit his head, hands, legs and entire body with pestle.
Ezike, whose viral video of his molestation and assault by the Anambra Anti-Touting Squad had generated widespread public concern, had said in previous interviews that he could not comprehend the grand conspiracy to terminate his life because he revealed that some dreaded government officials in the present administration had blatantly refused to pay him the N12 million they owed him.
Mgbiligba while spoking at Orthopedic hospital Enugu amidst excruciating pains even as he struggled with his crutches, appealed to Human Rights Organisations, the Nigeria Police and other constituted authorities to wade into the matter because his life is no longer safe.
* Anambra State Government has marked the 2024 World Tuberculosis Day with an assurance to increase intervention campaigns against the deadly disease.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, disclosed this during a press briefing to commemorate the day at the Tuberculosis Data Situation Room, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka. According to Dr. Obidike, World Tuberculosis Day holds profound significance for the state as it provides opportunity to raise awareness about Tuberculosis, one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, and to reaffirm commitment to combating the global health threat.
