# The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, accompanied by members of his cabinet, has paid a visit to the permanent site of Shanahan University, where construction of the institution’s permanent facilities is actively ongoing.
The royal delegation was received and conducted round the project site by the Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, alongside the Vice Chancellor, Fr. Prof. Josephat Oguejiofor, and the Project Manager, Fr. Charles Ututo.
Also present were the Financial Administrator of the Archdiocese, Fr Philip Ibeneme, and the Secretary to the Archbishop, Fr. Kingsley Omenyi.
Speaking during the visit, Archbishop Okeke highlighted the vision driving the establishment of the university, situating it within the rich historical identity of Onitsha as a cradle of civilization in Eastern Nigeria. He made special reference to Ignatius Shanahan, whose pioneering missionary and educational efforts laid the foundation for the growth of the Church and formal education in the region.
In his remarks, Igwe Achebe expressed deep admiration for the scale, vision, and speed of work at the site, describing the development as remarkable. He commended the Archdiocese for bringing the vision of the university to life within such a short period, noting that the institution is already making significant impact.
# Rising cases of moral decadence among school children have prompted the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to introduce a Citizenship Brigade across schools in Anambra State.
The Acting Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Anambra State Directorate, Awka, Barr. Ifeoma Chijioke, decried the growing moral decadence and other social vices among Nigerian youths and school children.
Chijioke made this known during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr. Vera Nwadinobi.
According to the NOA boss, pupils and junior secondary school students in the state are increasingly indulging in drug abuse, cultism, examination malpractice, sexual abuse, and other social vices. She described the development as disturbing and linked it to what she termed a warped value system in society.
# The Anambra State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs. Pauline Ojisua, has called for intensified efforts toward promoting moral actitude among Nigerian youths, stressing the need for strategic sensitisation to address societal ills.
Mrs. Ojisua made the admonition while receiving the State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Barr. Mrs. Ifeoma Chijioke, during a courtesy visit to the NYSC Anambra State Secretariat on Thursday 26th March 2026..
The NYSC boss noted that while challenges such as drug abuse remain important, greater emphasis should be placed on instilling sound values and correcting negative behaviours among young people through deliberate orientation programmes.
According to Ojisua, NYSC provides a veritable platform to shape the mindset of youths, particularly members of Generation Z, in order to secure a more responsible and value-driven Generation Alpha.
# Anambra State Special Anti-touting Squad (Onitsha branch) has apprehended Mr. Sunday from Ebonyi State, who bought these children from Abakaliki for 3.5 million Naira
Mr Sunday confessed that he bought the Children and came to Onitsha to sell them to one Mrs Uju, who he said was looking for children to train because she doesn’t have any biological children of her own.
One of the children is 3years old while the older one is 5years old.
Mr. Sunday was caught at Nkpor, Anambra State, where he lodged the children in a hotel with plans to deliver them to his client (Mrs Uju) before going back to Sagamu(Ogun state) where he resides.
# Anambra State High Court sitting at Ogidi in Idemili Judicial Division has sentenced to death by hanging one Chidubem Anawonwa after convicting him of the murder of his 74-year-old mother, Theresa Anawonwa, in Umuokokpa Aborji Village Oba, Idemili South LGA on 23rd April 2019.
The Court presided over by Justice Lauretta Oyeka, maintained that the offence is contrary to Section 271 of Criminal Code Cap. 36 Revised Laws of Anambra State, 1991 as amended.
The prosecution, led by a Chief State Counsel, Obiageli Nwankiti, and a Principal State Counsel, Uju Igboeli, in charge no. HID/7C/2020, presented the case, with evidence revealing Chidubem’s long history of violence against his mother, including physical abuse and death threats.
# The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie has undertook an inspection of the University’s long-abandoned Sports Stadium.
Prof. Anyaehie during the tour of the sports complex, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the facility.
Visibly displeased, the Vice-Chancellor
emphasized the urgent need for intervention, noting that the current state of the stadium falls short of the standards expected of a leading institution.
Prof. Anyaehie highlighted the importance of attracting investors and strategic partners to support the redevelopment and modernization of the stadium. He stressed that revitalizing the facility would not only restore its lost glory but also position the University as a hub for sporting excellence.
Reaffirming his commitment to sports development, the Vice-Chancellor noted that improved infrastructure would significantly boost the performance and morale of the University’s athletes, paving the way for greater achievements in local and national competitions.
# The Legal Aid Coordinating Committee, Anambra State has visited the Awka Custodial Centre to assess the welfare and legal standing of inmates, particularly those facing prolonged detention without trial.
The Deputy Controller of the Awka Custodial Centre, Mr. Innocent Amaechi, who received the team, provided critical information on the state of affairs within the facility.
According to Amaechi, several categories of cases were observed including ‘Awaiting Trial Inmates’ who have spent two years or more without appearing in court, Inmates who have been granted bail but are yet to perfect their bail conditions, and Inmates with minor offences, some of whom have been granted bail but have not met the bail conditions, and others granted bail without the court explicitly stating the conditions.
The committee led by Rose Okeke Esq, included Chinaza Ekwemeze Esq. and Dr. Gabriel Alonta assured the inmates of their commitment to assist in meeting bail conditions where possible, and to ensure legal representation for those in need.
The Legal Aid Coordinating Committee expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Awka Custodial Centre for their cooperation, and reaffirmed their dedication to protecting the rights of vulnerable persons in detention.
# A former political appointee in the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dr. Nelson Omenugha, has formally resumed his academic duties at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, marking a return to the classroom after four years of public service.
Dr. Omenugha, who served as Special Adviser on Youth Empowerment Programmes during the governor’s first term, disclosed that his return to the Department of Mass Communication signals a “full-circle journey” from academia to governance and back. His return follows the expiration of political appointments and the dissolution of the first-term cabinet as the administration transitions into a new phase.
Reflecting on his time in government through a post shared on his social media handle on Friday, the former aide expressed gratitude to Governor Soludo for what he described as a rare opportunity to contribute to youth-focused policies and initiatives.
His role as Special Adviser, it was gathered, placed him at the forefront of programmes aimed at youth engagement, empowerment, and capacity development, in line with the administration’s broader vision for the youths and human capital development.
