# The Anambra State House of Assembly urges Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Health, on the urgent need to establish an independent monitoring unit within the Ministry of Health.
The 8th Assembly Assembly at plenary on Tuesday, through its resolution called for the monitoring of the activities of Health Personnel in public health facilities, and checkmate reported cases of medical negligence which has resulted in loss of lives.
Sponsor of the motion, Hon. Chidiebere Ibemeka in his submission noted that the CCTV should be monitored from Ministry of Health and the establishment of an Independent Complaint Desk Officers, in and around the Emergency Unit, Intensive Care Unit and other key Units to checkmate reported medical negligence
Hon. Ibekwe who is the lawmaker representing Njikoka One Constituency, expressed concerns by recurring reports and public outcries regarding alleged medical negligence, slow emergency response times, and perceived unprofessional conduct by some healthcare personnel, which have reportedly led to avoidable loss of lives;
# Acting Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Anambra State, Bar Ifeoma Chijioke advised Nigerians both at home and in diaspora not to allow their cultural, social and religious differences to rob them of their common destiny.
Chijioke while speaking during the first meeting of the year held at the Corporate office of the Industrial Trust Fund (ITF) in Awka, underscored the need to embrace principles of National Identity Project and National Values Charter of the Federal Government as some of the measures geared towards building Nigeria as one of the greatest nations in the world.
# The Department of Guidance and Counseling, Dunukofia LGA, has organized a Primary School Quiz Competition as Part of its academic and developmental support activity for Pupils in the area.
Speaking on the event which took place at the Unity Primary School, Ukpo, the Officer-in-Charge, Mrs. Celestina Oranye represented by the Guidance and Counselling Officer, Ozalla Primary School, Ifitedunu, Mr. Solomon Nwankwo said, “the competition was aimed at promoting academic excellence, building self-confidence, and encouraging healthy intellectual interactions among Pupils.
The competition which pulled together not fewer than 22 schools in Dunukofia LGA involved basically pupils in basic four class who were screened and presented for the competition based on their academic performances and the teachers’ recommendations.
According to Mrs. Oranye, the Supervising Desk Officer, Njikoka Local Government Education Authority under the Department of Guidance and Counseling served as the coordinator and judge for the programme.
# Egbo Beach Soccer Club has emerged as the first-ever champions of the Anambra Beach Soccer League.
The newly crowned kings secured their title with a commanding 4-1 victory over Diligent Brothers BSC in a thrilling final played at the Moonshine Beach Soccer Arena in Nnewi.
The inaugural champions had to overcome their toughest opponent in a tense and caggy encounter that kept the large crowd of fans on the edge of their seats.
Supporters who turned out in impressive numbers were treated to a display of high-quality beach soccer, leaving the arena thoroughly fulfilled by the spectacle.
# A Catholic priest, Fr. Angelo Chidi Unegbu, has condemned the Anambra State Government over the demolition of a shrine and the burning of items recovered from the premises of a convicted native doctor.
The shrine, belonging to Mr. Chidozie Nwangwu, (Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki) was destroyed following a judgment delivered by a High Court sitting in Awka.
The court sentenced Nwangwu to 11 months’ imprisonment for his involvement in ritual practices known as “oke ite” and other related offences.
Reacting to the development, Fr. Unegbu described the burning of the items as inhumane and unnecessary.
In a statement shared online, the Priest questioned the rationale behind destroying materials that could have been subjected to further examination.
# Regina Caeli College of Nursing Sciences, Awka, has commenced arrangements to partner with an American university as part of its efforts to offer students globally standard nursing education.
The Chairman of the College’s Board of Directors, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubuisi, disclosed this while speaking on the outcome of the Board’s inaugural meeting held at the College’s conference room.
Ndubuisi explained that the Board deliberated on the prospects and the teething challenges, particularly accommodation, facing the College.
# The National Association of Banking and Finance Students, Class of ’99, of Nnamdi Azikiwe University honored top-performing students of the department at its annual Academic Excellence Awards.
During the ceremony, held at the university’s Banking and Finance Hall, outstanding students who demonstrated exceptional dedication to their studies received laptops, while others had their school fees fully sponsored, efforts designed to motivate academic commitment and alleviate financial pressures on deserving students.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Department (HOD) of Banking and Finance, Prof. Gideon Ezu, praised the alumni’s thoughtful initiative, describing it as a shining example of how alumni can positively impact current students’ academic journeys, commended the hard work and perseverance of the alumni, saying that it would inspire even greater dedication and a culture of excellence in the department, and called for more alumni engagement.
Representatives of the NABAF Class of ’99, Mr. Ndubisi Agbatekwe and Mr. Ahmed Inua, highlighted the importance of giving back, stating that the awards are meant to encourage a sustained pursuit of knowledge, reward excellence and reduce financial burdens so that students can focus fully on their studies, and they promised the sustainability of the programme.
The Banking and Finance President, Christopher Odii, described the event as the first of its kind, expressed satisfaction with the development and called for its sustainability.
# The Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) has identified over-speeding and driver’s unfamiliarity with the Agulu Lake Hill terrain as the primary causes of the fatal road traffic crash that claimed multiple lives along the busy corridor.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ARTMA, Engr. Emeka Konti-Okonkwo disclosed this in an official report issued, following a detailed on-site inspection and joint safety engagement with relevant authorities and stakeholders at the scene of the crash that claimed four lives and left nine others injured.
According to the report, ARTMA received a distress alert at about 6:25 p.m. on Friday regarding the tragic accident which occurred at Agulu Lake Hill in Agulu, involving a fully loaded truck and two commercial buses.
Preliminary investigations by the agency revealed that the crash was triggered when the truck driver, who was reportedly unfamiliar with the hilly terrain, descended the slope at high speed and subsequently lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a devastating collision.
