* Anambra State Government has handed over sites for the construction of different projects within Awka Capital Territory. The projects comprise the construction of the Solution Innovation District by Dutum Construction Ltd, the Alternative Building at Government House, Awka by 6Point Construction Ltd, and the Deputy Governor’s Office at Government House, Awka by MIO Construction Ltd. Performing the handover ceremony, the Commissioner for Works, Mr Ifeanyi Okoma said that Governor Chukwuma Soludo is in a hurry to develop the state and so, the handover signified the commencement of construction works.

Okoma charged the contractors to work according to specifications and adhere strictly to the completion period. He said how well they do the job will determine if they are going to get another.

* Anambra governor’s wife Mrs Nonye Soludo has been honoured with a ‘Humanitarian Service and Human Development Award’ by the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Anambra State Branch. The award ceremony was a major highlight of the 2024 World Red Cross Day celebration, which took place in Awka. 

According to Red Cross, the humanitarian honour was a recognition of the unprecedented impact of Mrs Soludo’s healthy living crusade on the renewed lifestyle among the people of Anambra State which has systematically affected the overall health indices of the state.

* Former Manager of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Onitsha branch, Nwachukwu Placidus, has been sentenced to a cumulative of 121 years in prison for diverting fixed deposit funds of a customer amounting to N112,100,000 for personal use. Justice S. N. Odili of the Anambra State High Court in Onitsha handed down the judgment following Placidus’ arraignment March 27, 2018, by the Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement explaining that the convict faced 16-count charges, including forgery, stealing, obtaining by false pretense, and uttering.

* The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has approved the appointments of the underlisted persons as members of the Governing Council of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe. Mrs Nneka Onyalu-Ikpe (Chairman), Chief Fidelis Nweke – member, Prof. (Rev Sis) Uju Marie-Esther Dibua – member, Ven (Dr) Rex C. Kanu – member and Prof. Celestine Uzoma Aguoru – member

* Anambra State Government has arrested eight suspects for allegedly extorting more than Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (800,000) from women in Awka. The eight suspects including the bankers met opening accounts for people at the said office complex and the items recovered has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department Awka for further investigation while the matter will be charged to court. When the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare Hon. Ify Obinabo stormed the office complex of the Host Communities of Nigeria Anambra State Chapter located opposite Government House Awka, it was discovered that the suspects were operating with a commercial Bank staff in opening a current account for the women who must pay the sum of ten thousand naira in cash and purchase the associations form with another ten thousand naira making it twenty thousand naira for an individual.

* Succour came to the less privileged camping in various locations in Onitsha, Anambra State, when Faithspiration Initiative in continuation of its Easter Charity outreach, offered them free food and cash. Faithspiration Initiative had barely one month embarked on Charity outreach to rural Communities in order to inspire and ensure that less privileged and vulnerable people felt the impact of 2024 Easter festival. Among the Communities so far visited with 5kg of Rice and cash of #5,000 included; Opi Agu in Nsukka local government and Agbani in Nkanu local government both in Enugu State, Mputu in Ogbaru Local government and Omor in Ayamelum local government both in Anambra State, Minna Niger State and Bamenda in Republic of Cameron.

* The Anambra State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, says investments that will create massive employment for the teeming unemployed youths in Anambra, are much needed at this time to begin to address the increasing rate of youths’ involvement in crime. The Anambra State NYCN Chairman, Ambassador Surveyor Obi Emeka Chukwudi made this known in a chat with newsmen in Awka, after receiving news of the employment of members of the council by an Anambra philanthropist and industrialist, Dr Sir Daniel Chukwudozie, OON, FNSE, Akudo Ndigbo.

* The new Anambra Fire Chief, Engr. Emmanuel Chiketa has commenced a state wide sensitization to beat fire disasters in the state. Speaking in an interview with journalists, Chiketa said

Anambra is a densely populated place, with lots of schools, gas plants, petrol stations and even living homes. Chiketa, who recently assumed office as the State’s Fire Chief further highlighted some of the efforts and feats so far recorded in firefighting by the agency under his watch. These, he said, include facility tour, sensitization programs, and safety awareness campaign in various institutions, including schools and streets, among others. He promised that he would work hard to ensure that fire incidences in the state are minimized, while also giving accolades to the state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo for his support to the service.

* The Transition Committee Chairman, Njikoka Local Government Area, Hon Clems Aguiyi, has distributed farm inputs including high yielding Cassava Stems,Maize and Fertilizers to 540 youths. Beneficiaries of the agricultural empowerment items supplied by Mmasinachi Agro Allied Company were drawn from 18 wards in the area under ” Solution Babes Initiative”.

* The Chairman Truth, Justice and Peace Commission Prof. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu says the insecurity in the Southeast must be tackled through a package of concerted measures and partnerships to de-escalate tension in the region and build inclusion with youths and communities. Odinkalu, a human rights lawyer, while speaking in Awka, Anambra State capital revealed that  a 2–day technical workshop themed  “Concord Initiative Zonal Workshop ” had been scheduled for May 16 and May 17 in Awka. The Don said the workshop was being organised in collaboration with the Office for Strategic Preparedness and  Resilience (OSPRE) in the Presidency and the Nigerian Army Resource Cente among other stakeholders.
