* Governor Chukwuma Soludo has been commended for his robust governance style which has brought meaningful development to all strata of the society.

The commendation was made by the Anambra state chapter of the National Association of Good Governance at their one-day meeting in Onitsha. The association traced the history of development in the state right from its creation on August 27, 1991 to date and posited that it was under Soludo’s administration that the state witnessed all factors of good governance applied simultaneously in all sectors to achieve the common goal of positive transformation of the economy.

* Following the recent news in print, broadcast and social media that the traditional ruler of Nanka in Orumba North Local Goverment Area, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo and the President General of the community, Canon Ifeanyichukwu Ezeike are minning sand in Amako Village Nanka, a group known as Concerned Citizens of Nanka has described the allegation as baseless and unfounded. Speaking, a former Chairman of Amako Village, Chief Emmanuel Chinedu-Nwofor said that the news holds no water as the traditional ruler and the president general are not minning sand anywhere in Amako Village, saying that no tipper or truck has ever plied the road that led to the so called beach in the last five to ten years. Chief Chinedu-Nwofor wondered why a group led by one Obinna Iloh is out to tarnish the image of their traditional ruler and that of their president general for no just course, and revealed that in 2021, the said Mr Iloh and his group pulled out of Nanka community and formed parallel government in search of an autonomous community, a situation he said has was part of the crisis in Amako Village, Nanka.

* No fewer than 30 drivers in Anambra State have been arraigned for trying to bribe officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps on duty, and sundry offences.

The arraignment of the drivers by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command, was in a bid to provide an open door for summary trial of road traffic offenders, as well as to curb the excesses of motorists on the highways. The drivers were arraigned before a mobile court sitting on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway presided over by Chief Magistrate Mike Anyadiegwu.

* Two Reverend Sisters of the Roman Catholic Church have been remanded in police custody by the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State capital. The remanding came following the arraignment of the Reverend Sisters — Angela Onyenachi Ibe (aged 42) and Chiemelie Jacinta Yvonne (Mother-General, aged 41), on a four count charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, punishable under sections 495(a) and 386 of the Criminal Code, Cap.

36, Volume II, the Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria, 1991, and illegal dealings on Children, as well as, fraudulent adoption, punishable under section 30(2)(b) of the Child’s Rights Law of Anambra State, 2004. According to Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo; the defendants, to the satisfaction of the Honourable Court, each pleaded not guilty of the offenses when the charge was read to them.

* Hon. Patrick Estate Onyedum, Chairman Anambra State Sports Commission and former Anaocha Local Government Chairman, recently shared insights in an interview regarding the highly anticipated 2024 Anaocha APGA Stakeholders Summit. During the discussion, Onyedum emphasized the significance of this forthcoming event, highlighting its primary objective of fostering unity among Anaocha Stakeholders and party members. According to him, “The core purpose of the summit is to rally support and solidarity among stakeholders and build a united front in preparation for the upcoming Anambra State Governorship Election.

* A former member of House of Representatives that represented Anambra East and West Federal Constituency, Hon. Chinedu Obidigwe has commended the National Assembly for the suspension of the recently introduced cybersecurity levy. Hon. Obidigwe who disclosed this while speaking to newsmen in Awka, said that though the cybersecurity levy is a law, the timing is wrong due to the prevailing economic realities in Nigeria. The former lawmaker extolled members of the national assembly for the halt in the policy as it will add to the sufferings of most Nigerians who cannot afford three square meals a day.

* Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike says the importance of family planning and child spacing in the current society can never be over emphasized, as it reduces economic burden on the parents, helps a woman to know when to born among others. The Health Commissioner while speaking during the state’s Cascade Training on Long-Acting Reversal Contraceptives (LARC) with emphasis on Levoplant Implant and Hormona-IUD produced by DKT, a non-governmental organization that develops family planning commodities and offers other services, reiterated the importance of family planning and child spacing in the society. Dr. Obidike who thanked DKT for supporting the state with various family planning commodities, noted that Anambra State will continue to partner them to achieve its family planning objectives and asked the participants to take the training serious in order to teach others in their various facilities across the state.

* Anambra State Government has stepped in to resolve the long standing boundary dispute between the Amaetiti and Okpeze communities in the Orumba North Local Government Area. The government waded into the dispute through a delegation of the Anambra State Boundary Committee led by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who visited the area on Thursday, May 9 to gather firsthand information and assess the situation. The contested boundary lies between Umuegbuo village in Amaetiti and Gbalagu Village in Okpeze town, the dispute of which has has persisted for decades, causing significant tension and discord between the communities.

* The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Anambra State branch has celebrated its 2024 Valuation Day with a sensitization tour across the State, aimed at educating the public on the benefits of precise property valuation.

According to the body, sensitization tour will increase transparency in property valuation and real estate transactions.

The celebration featured a variety of activities, including talks and workshops led by experienced estate surveyors and valuers highlighting the significance of accurate property assessment for financial planning, economic growth, and its overall impact on the economy.

Addressing the gathering, the Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers Anambra State branch, Mr Chris Chukwuma noted the high turnout and professionalism of members, emphasizing the dual goals of assessing property and educating the community on the importance of regular valuations for financial stability and economic development.

* The UNIZIK Business School (UBS) has held a two-day 6th Hybrid International Conference with the theme: “Climate and Environmental Challenges: Advancing the Frontiers of Disruptive Innovations in Africa”. In his remarks, Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Frederick Odibo commended the UNIZIK Business School for creating a forum for a very important discussion on climate change through the International Conference. The Special Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor (SAVC) on Academic Matters described the theme as very apt in addressing issues on environmental degradation and protection of the ecosystem. Declaring the conference open during his address, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone described the theme of the conference as germane to the extant global focus on sustainable development compelled by the thoughtless manner in which humankind had exploited the Earth’s resources. Prof. Esimone affirmed that the consequences of Climate change are manifesting in pollution on land, water and soil in the form of deforestation, desertification, global warming and ozone layer deflection which poses health hazards to humankind and other biospecies.
