* The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Anambra State axis has passed a vote of confidence on the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Prof. Charles Esimone. The students therefore called on the Federal Government to ensure that the laid down rules and regulations regarding succession of the office of the VC in the absence of a Governing Council for the university is followed strictly. The students stated this in a communique issued after a joint campus council election of NANS, Anambra State axis.
* Aliko Dangote Foundation has begun distributing 10,000 bags of 10 kilograms of rice to indigent people in Anambra State. The distribution which is being handled by a non governmental organization, Justice Development and Peace Caritas, (JDPC), an organisation owned by the Awka Catholic Diocese is being done at local government level.
Executive Director of JDPC, Awka Diocese, Rev. Father Levi Uko who addressed journalists at Ekwulobia, during the distribution exercise for Aguata Local Government Area explained that JDPC was chosen for the distribution for Anambra after a screening exercise. The foundation through JDPC also provided money to the community leaders for movement of the rice to various communities. President Generals of various communities who received the bags of rice thanked Alhaji Aliko Dangote for providing the food item, while praising him for thinking it wise to intervene in the lives of indigent people.
* The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam since the assumption of duty has continued to advocate his Policing Plan and Model which has to do with, Practical Intelligence, Technology-driven and Tactical Operations in the State, to relevant Stakeholders including Officers and Men of the Command. The CP while addressing the Sectional Heads in the Operations Department directs the creation of Field Operations Surveillance Centers and Field Operations Retraining Centers within the Area Commands. CP Itam directs training of Officers on the use of drones for surveillance, refresher courses on weapon handling, musketry, and other monitoring devices aimed to nip crime in the bud and guide investigations when crimes are committed.
* A popular Catholic Priest of Onitsha Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Basil Chukwuemeka Gbuzuo has been kidnapped
Yet-to-be-identified gunmen. Fr. Gbuzuo, popularly known as ‘Man pass Man’, a resident priest at Holy Trinity Parish, Ogidi, is the Spiritual Director of Mountain of Solution Catholic Adoration Ministry (MOSCAM), a prayer ministry attended by a multitude of worshippers every week in Anambra State. Chancellor of Onitsha Archdiocese, Rev. Fr, Prudentius Aroh, who confirmed the kidnap incident in a letter dated May 16, 2024, and addressed to all priests, religious and lay faithful of the Archdiocese, disclosed that Fr. Gbuzuo was kidnapped, on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, along the Eke Nkpor-Obosi Bypass, at about 8am. He said the abductors were yet to establish contact with anybody.
* A renowned philanthropist, Sir Emeka Offor has donated N100 million endowment fund for the development of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).
Offor, who is the Executive Chairman of Chrome Group of Companies, made the donation shortly after he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Business Administration during the 52nd Convocation of UNN in Nsukka. Offor, who was represented by Chief Steve Ahaneku, said that the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Charles Igwe, would be called later to discuss mode of disbursement of the money and the area of development the money would used in the university.
* Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial district, Ifeanyi Ubah has blamed the past and current administrations of the state over their refusal conduct local government elections in the state in the last 18 years.
Ubah a Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) stated this during plenary while making his contributions to a motion sponsored by Senator Kawu, Suleiman Abdulrahman (Kano South) which called on President Bola Tinubu to revive the local government system. Ubah lamented that Anambra State has not conducted local government elections in the last 18 years.
* Activities at the various courts in Anambra State were paralysed following a boycott of courts by lawyers, to press for the release of the Secretary, Idemili Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chukwubuikem .J. S. Asoro, who was kidnapped at Abagana. A circular posted to all lawyers and different branches of the NBA, Anambra State, through their branch chairmen, signed by the Chairman, Committee of Chairmen and Secretaries, NBA branches, Anambra State, I. C. Nsofor, ordered all lawyers to ensure strict compliance to the directive to boycott courts.
* The Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Charles Esimone has described Prof. Obiefuna as a well known person in the university who was active till the last minutes of his years in the university. Prof. Esimone while speaking at the Valedictory Lecture and Festschrift Presentation of Rev. Fr. Prof. Boniface Anthony Chijioke Obiefuna as he bows out of the service of Nnamdi Azikiwe University on completion of the mandatory age of 70, noted that in his work ethics remained objective, frank, blunt, and principled, adding that the university would gladly have him serve more in other capacities as he is retiring but not yet tired.
* The Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Sector Command has handed over goods recovered from the Scene of a Road Traffic Crash (RTC) which occured around Umuokpu Timber Market, along Awka – Onitsha Expressway on where One male adult was reported killed. In a Press Release, the Staff Officer, Public Education, FRSC, Anambra State, ARC Charles Iyiegbuniwe, said the victims of the fatal crash and one Mr. Odoh, who represented the driver of the Toyota Sienna, were present at the Command to identify and collect their belongings. Mr Odoh who spoke on behalf of the victims, thanked the Federal Road Safety Corps for the high level of professionalism exhibited during the rescue operation. He also confirmed that their goods were complete and intact, and encouraged the FRSC staff not to relent in their efforts to protect lives and property by keeping the highways safe for all road users.
* The Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Engr Chris Obiorah, has provided support to widows and the vulnerable in Umudimnkwa village, Umudim, Nnewi to cushion the harsh effects of the current economic situation in Nigeria. The over 130 widows and indigents were carefully selected across the kindreds in Umudimnkwa village. Addressing the women, Engr. Obiorah emphasized that the Governor Soludo-led administration is very particular about the vulnerable, the elderly and the indigent ones in the society and assured he will continue to care for them and give them sense of belonging as the TC Chairman of Nnewi North LGA.
